  • RECOVERY. Let’s talk about it. 👏🏼
.
I‘m coming off of four in a row at work. As you 9-5ers are logging into the latest version of Windows shaking off the residual of Sunday scaries, I am squinting in the sunlight dreaming of my head hitting my soft pillow in 5, 4, 3, 2...😴
.
Ah, #nurselife. We run around in the wee hours of the night for 12 hours doing our best to keep critically ill people alive and that shit can be exhausting. Mentally, physically, emotionally. But the rush of working in a high acuity setting is challenging and incredibly rewarding. And being an active part of someone’s recovery process during their darkest time in life lights me up big time, so I’m gonna keep doing it. Obviously, recovery looks a lot different in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit vs. Barry’s, but that’s for another time. ✅
.
So when I’m on back to back, I pretty much have 0 hours left to myself in that given stretch of time. I used to push myself to workout after work. Unnecessary. I was killing myself to do more, more, more but had zero bandwidth left to, like, text people back within a week? NOT COOL, Kim. So I learned to value sleep more. And that has made me a more efficient human being. It took me almost 6 months to learn this. Changing the way we do things takes time. You can’t just be like Alexa, optimize my life! Because, hey friends - personal growth is personal! We learn, we get better, we change up the conditions, we rinse & repeat like an exotic shampoo from Morocco. 💆🏻‍♀️
.
So I took the last three days off of working out. Sue me. It. Felt. Fahking. Glorious. 🙏🏼
.
The sexy thing is that this time off allowed me to appreciate the million things my body does for me every day. It was also a prime opportunity to hone in on nutrition. Remember when I said I used to work out after these shifts? Ya, I was also eating whatever the hell I wanted to so it was a wash. Now that I’ve freed up time to be more mindful about the fuel I put into my body, I sleep soundly, my jam sessions in the car are high quality, and we are back on air for season 2 of the series “A journey back to abs.” 😭 .
Now I can’t wait to hit it first chance I get! See you tonight, Barry’s fam. 🌟

I know I can do this because I have @21daymealplan on my side. If you want to try the meal plan that got me to -45 in 4 months the link is in my bio. Use Code: Feben10 (link in bio) for 10% off... this plan has changed my relationship with food from a way to deal with my pain into a way to fuel for my body

  • Why is it that diet culture is always telling us that weight LOSS = success?! I’m ALL about some weight loss if that’s what YOU need to get healthy BUT health does NOT = weight loss.

If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know I GAINED about 15-20lbs over the last year. I hired a running/nutrition coach 2 years ago and we started tracking my macros to make sure I was getting enough to FUEL my body for my training & of course, I wasn’t. Over the course of those 2 years, I tracked EVERYTHING...initially, I lost a few pounds but THEN my body responded to my increased intake and slowly started making its way to my “healthy weight”. ————————————————————————-
I went from putting my body under constant stress @ 110lbs, having daily headaches from lack of food, not having much energy, and not having a regular period
TO
My body getting to its “healthy weight” @125ish, no longer having headaches from lack of food, having SO much more energy, & having a REGULAR period (for ONCE IN MY LIFE!). At first, the weight gain was HARD & I REALLY struggled with the mental aspect of it and also with the physical aspect. Diet culture leads us to believe that weight gain is BAD & it’s truly SO hard to change that mindset when that’s all you’ve ever known.

BUT weight gain is NOT bad. In fact, it’s been one of the BEST things for me!!! Not only do I feel (& look) strong AF, I’m also SO much stronger mentally and emotionally.

When you fight your body’s natural weight & do not give it the fuel it needs, it puts your body under CONSTANT stress which then messes up EVERYTHING. Your body is focusing on trying to maintain a smaller weight & running on less fuel so it compromises in other areas (immune system, reproductive system, etc.). On the flip side, when you give your body the FUEL it needs, it can DO ITS JOB FULLY & SUCCESSFULLY!!! God knew what He was doing when He made bodies & {not surprisingly} He made them to be freaking POWER HOUSES. BUT they HAVE TO HAVE FUEL to run efficiently.

It’s time for us to STOP the stigmas diet culture has put into place. Weight gain is NOT bad. Food is FUEL. Take CARE of your dang body, people!!! #dietculture #stopthestigma #womenshealth

  • From the man @higdonaaron himself: “So the one on the right was taken today the other was March 2018. I know it's not a huge difference but I have only been in #crossfit since November 2018. The weight difference is about 2 pounds. This goes to show the scale does not tell the whole story. I want thank all the coaches at @celebrationcrossfit for pushing me and and showing me how strong I am and that I can push past the limits I have set for myself. Even on those days I do not want to push.” .
