  • "The problem is that white people see racism as conscious hate, when racism is bigger than that. Racism is a complex system of social and political levers and pulleys set up generations ago to continue working on the behalf of whites at other people’s expense, whether whites know/like it or not. Racism is an insidious cultural disease. It is so insidious that it doesn’t care if you are a white person who likes Black people; it’s still going to find a way to infect how you deal with people who don’t look like you. Yes, racism looks like hate, but hate is just one manifestation. Privilege is another. Access is another. Ignorance is another. Apathy is another. And so on. So while I agree with people who say no one is born racist, it remains a powerful system that we’re immediately born into. It’s like being born into air: you take it in as soon as you breathe. It’s not a cold that you can get over. There is no anti-racist certification class. It’s a set of socioeconomic traps and cultural values that are fired up every time we interact with the world. It is a thing you have to keep scooping out of the boat of your life to keep from drowning in it. I know it’s hard work, but it’s the price you pay for owning everything."

  • Knik Glacier near Anchorage was remarkable. How do you capture this feeling? I was on a small plane looking down and just totally blown away as we flew across 2 glaciers and endless ice and snow. My white works are trying to capture this feeling.

  • As a Human and a Creative, I can no longer use the concepts of Good and Evil, in reference to Light and Darkness, in my everyday speech or fictional writings. I’ve come to realize how much it subconsciously reenforces the twisted world views of people with light skin versus those with dark skin. Though some may see this as a small and insignificant matter, there are people who have come to truly hate themselves and their skin because of such things.#Psychology #Philosophy #MindOvetCulture #RefineYourLanguage #Colorism #Light #Dark #Whiteness #Blackness #Good #Evil

RepostBy @embracingblackculture: "*Sigh* 😪🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♂️ This is why Black writers matter. To put it simply, the #WhiteSavior trope is used in movies and literature, to prevent White audiences from feeling too guilty or uncomfortable while diving into the WONDERFUL stories of slavery, the civil rights movement, and overall White oppression. ☺️😊 You can determine if you just watched a #WhiteSavior movie, if when you leave the theatre, all the White people are feeling good about themselves, because they relate SO MUCH to the hero...who was White...in a story that was about racism, Black genocide, and yup, you guessed it, overall White oppression. ☺️😊 This skit describes it perfectly. 👌🏿Bravo! @amberruffin Bra-vo! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 [Source::@latenightseth]"

  • "Racism is a structure, not an event. While hate groups that openly proclaim white superiority do exist and this term refers to them also, the popular consciousness solely associates white supremacy with these radical groups. This reductive definition obscures the reality of the larger system at work and prevents us from addressing this system." - Robin DeAngelo, 2018.
.
It is the responsibility of white people to consistently examine and question and grow in order to be successful allies in our world. In order to ensure that equal access and rights are given, we must acknowledge our whiteness and the role it plays in the world and our lives. Personally, this is an ongoing process and I have routinely come across things that make me uncomfortable with myself and my actions or thoughts. I have had to admit I am not where I want to be and have harmed people I love because of my unconscious biases or neglect of racial awareness. It is not shameful to admit that there is room for growth and personal reflection in order to be a better ally and human being. .

  • Privilege. It's one of those words often centred around whiteness (particularly in my work with @diversitymattersuk addressing race equality in the workplace)... As a black woman, especially as a dark-skin women, I'm made to feel I'm at the bottom of the 'prividge' food chain (and often, I am!)... But on this trip the coin has been flipped (this is why travel is so important to contextualise) - everything about my Blackness, my 'Africanness', my gender (strong black woman associated with 'Mama Africa'!), the 'taboo' of proudly acknowledging I had an enslaved ancestor from Brazil - is what has given me the privilege to access and connect with various Afro-Latin communities on such a deep and meaningful way, than being just 'British', or even Black British could have.
.
.
So where we are taught to assimilate, I say let's celebrate our differences! Where we're taught to blend in, I say stand out and make a statement. Where we're stripped of our identities (because, gosh, imagine being more than one thing!) I say claim every ounce of your being with pride... Let's change the narrative of privilege being centred around #whiteness, which therefore minimises our diverse experiences... I don't doubt for the minute that it's my blackness and more so being African which has afforded the privilege of experiencing South America in such a unique and exciting way! #Reflection #NoteToSelf #Palenque #Liberation #Freedom

Hi, this is Tatyana Fazlalizadeh (@tlynnfaz), and this week I'm taking over @ColorOfChange's account to show you some of my work that challenges sexism and racism. My work focuses on women, Black folks, queer folks, and how we navigate multiple oppressions based on our intersecting identities.⁣
⁣
This is a series that I'm working on that questions whiteness. In this work, I pose questions to white passersby that point out to them how they are complicit in race and racism. Whiteness has so very long been the ability to walk around the world unmarked, unchecked, just being "normal". People who are racialized, like Black folks, are constantly seen for their race and then, judged, criminalized, attacked. Instead of letting white people just get to be, this series is attempting to bring them into the problem of race, to racialize them by pointing out their whiteness, and questioning how they fit into this world, and what they are doing about it. The first piece here is a play on the quote from James Baldwin, that was a starting point for this work: "...But if I am not the nigger, and it's true that your invention reveals you, then who is the nigger?...I give you your problem back. You're nigger baby, it isn't me."⁣
⁣
Thanks to #ColorOfChange for having me here this week. To keep up with my work and what I'm doing, you can follow me at @tlynnfaz. ⁣

  • Hi, this is Tatyana Fazlalizadeh (@tlynnfaz), and this week I'm taking over @ColorOfChange's account to show you some of my work that challenges sexism and racism. My work focuses on women, Black folks, queer folks, and how we navigate multiple oppressions based on our intersecting identities.⁣

Thanks to #ColorOfChange for having me here this week. To keep up with my work and what I'm doing, you can follow me at @tlynnfaz. ⁣

  • RepostBy @shaunking: "I am standing with my friend and brother @attorneycrump in this lawsuit against @harvard. It’s despicable and must be answered.
Until speaking with Crump yesterday – I had never heard of this story in my entire life, but it’s despicable. A famed professor at Harvard in the 1850s, Louis Aggasiz, the most known and respected scientist at the university at the time, was attempting to prove that Africans were inferior to whites, and commissioned a study toward that end. And in doing so, Harvard University paid plantation owners to have photographers strip enslaved Africans completely nude for crass photos of them used in the study.

This lawsuit is one of the most important lawsuits ever filed in modern American history on the issue of slavery and reparations because the living descendant of Renty and Delia, Tamara Lanier, is demanding that Harvard not only publicly acknowledge its role in this horrific abuse, but that it immediately turn these photos over to her.

When will @harvard #harvarduniversity 📡FREE RENTY 📡 and separate one of the largest educational systems in the world..... From #slavery Profit & False Teachings of Blacks in captivity!?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The White-Man-Asian-Boy and the Fit-Top-Effeminate-Bottom pairings were institutionalized in Queer communities and had become the most generic and harmful stereotypes of gay relationships, exposing the social acceptance of a rigid dichotomy between default masculine whiteness and the submissive, exotic, feminized Asianness. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
