  • Switching back to the medical field has been nothing short of a miracle. This year I got the chance to recover from old wounds and made the decision to move forward in my career choice. In the past, I’ve always gotten into the habit of wanting to make an impact but never really committed to a single path. You won’t believe how many career switches I’ve made and the amount of “big talk” I did because I couldn’t restrain myself. I wanted to look important. To be honest, I considered the idea of becoming a doctor since it was a trend during my first year in college. If not, then maybe a nurse. Obviously, I didn’t realize how uneducated I was about the medical field so I gave up on pursuing medicine that same year because I was convinced that I wasn’t smart enough to do it. I had low self esteem, always compared myself to others, and always felt inadequate. I opted for other career paths and later found out that none of them resonated with my passion for people and my current skills. Four years later, I spontaneously decided to volunteer for a one-day clinic event in SF this past summer. You can read about it in one of my previous posts but during that time, I met Dr. Chester and he showed me what it meant to be used by God into serving others and healing people just so that they can have another day to hear/see/touch the Gospel. I realize that it was never about me or my benefit. It was about saving lives. To be committed to this vision, I wanted to break the pattern of “simply dreaming” and transition into taking action. I need to address my mental baggage and fight against psychological poverty. I need to believe that nothing is ever too late and I won’t be anything less. Took a year to evaluate this decision and eventually joined Imani Clinic and worked at the UCDMC MICU department. Of course being a non-traditional pre-health student has delayed many personal goals in life but it’s really about how badly you want to do something. I love people so much and I want to give my life to do just that. Thank you to those who believed in me, guided me, and prayed for me. Committed to become a PA!

  • My panther chameleon vivarium was recently selected as a winner in the 2019 UC Davis Veterinary School’s behavior enrichment contest! I’ve been adding to it every few weeks, and it currently contains 30 different plant species.
I’ve also been allowing hornworms and soldier flies to pupate in the substrate, so Spicoli can hunt them as they emerge.

  • ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Corey Pilgrim is a recent graduate from the Casey Lab. His PhD research focused on the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to characterize uranium and neptunium complexes in aqueous solution. Variable-pressure and variable-temperature experiments were conducted to measure the complexation dynamics within these systems. This research was carried out in close collaboration with the Seaborg Institute at Lawrence Livermore National Lab.
-
Currently, Corey is a post-doctoral research associate at Idaho National Lab, where he is using his NMR knowledge to explore the thermodynamics and coordination chemistry of aminopolycarboxylate ligands with the lanthanides and actinides.

  • Kabian Ritter is originally from Orangeburg, South Carolina and earned his BS in Chemistry from Howard University in 2017. He participated in the Evolution and Ecology Graduate Admission Pathways summer program at UC Davis in 2015 and is currently pursuing his PhD in Energy Systems as a part of the first Energy Graduate Group cohort at UC Davis, working with Prof. Jesus Velazquez on designing nanostructured materials for water desalination. Kabian is also a recipient of the prestigious University of California–Historically Black Colleges and Universities Initiative Fellowship!
-
A key concept of graduate education at UC Davis is the graduate group. Our graduate programs are organized as interdisciplinary graduate groups, giving students intellectual freedom to transcend disciplines and areas of research. While Kabian is technically not a student in the Chemistry Graduate Program, he works with one of our professors who is a member of the Energy Graduate Group.
