From the photographer: That was definitely our most beautiful night under the Aurora. I knew something was brewing after seeing the solar activity data, so we decided to hike up mount Reinebringen and camp there for the night. The tent was not on even ground, it was cold and windy. But who cared?

📷: Worm Moon
Photo & video by @Miguel_Claro
The image features the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere with a beautiful Super “Worm Moon” – as it is named according to folklore – rising behind the Tower/Palace of Evoramonte. Supermoons happen when a full moon approximately coincides with the moon’s perigee, or a point in its orbit at which it is closest to Earth.
In Evoramonte was signed on 26th May of 1834, a Peace Treaty known as “Convention of Evoramonte” or “Concession of Evoramonte” which ended the only Portuguese civil war in almost 900 years of History. Due to this important historical heritage, Evoramonte is also the birthplace of the European Network of Places of Peace (www.placesofpeace.eu). At the highest point of the village of Evoramonte rises the Tower/Palace of Evoramonte commonly considered as the “ex-libris” of the village. The Tower/ Palace of Evoramonte was built by the Dukes of Bragança D. Teodósio and D. Jaime as a symbol of its power reflected in the tie of Manueline reminiscences that is the symbolic mark of the heraldry of the House of Bragança. The image is a result of two combined exposures to help reveal all the details in the Moon's disk as well as in the foreground.

📷: Star Trails and the Equinox Sunrise
Explanation: Stars trail and the Sun rises in this night and day composite panorama made on March 19. The view looks toward the eastern horizon from La Nava de Santiago, Spain. To create it, a continuous series of digital frames was recorded for about two hours and combined to trace the concentric motion of the stars through the night sky. A reflection of the Earth's rotation, star trails curve around the north celestial pole toward upper left and the south celestial pole toward the lower right. Of course on that day the Sun was near the celestial equator, a diagonal straight line in the wide-angle projection. A dense dimming filter was used to capture the Sun's image every two minutes. Superimposed on the star trails it rose due east in the morning sky. In the scene, foreground landscape and alocal prehistoric monument were illuminated by full moonlight, though. The monument's corridor faces nearly to the east and the equinox sunrise.

HAPPY #NOWRUZ 🇮🇷 :

Nowruz (Persian: نوروز‎ Nowruz, [nouˈɾuːz]; literally "new day") is the Iranian New Year also known as the Persian New Year, which is celebrated worldwide by various ethno-linguistic groups. Despite its Iranian and Zoroastrian origins, Nowruz has been celebrated by diverse communities. It has been celebrated for over 3,000 years in Western Asia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Black Sea Basin, and the Balkans. It is a secularholiday for most celebrants that is enjoyed by people of several different faiths, but remains a holy day for Zoroastrians, Bahais, and some Muslim communities. Nowruz is the day of the vernal equinox, and marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It marks the first day of the first month (Farvardin) of the Iranian calendar. It usually occurs on March 21or the previous or following day, depending on where it is observed. The moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator and equalizes night and day is calculated exactly every year, and families gather together to observe the rituals.

  • Pantalica's Dream

The necropolis of Pantalica (Sicily - Italy) is one of the Unesco World Heritage sites in Sicily.
It constitutes one of the most important Sicilian proto-historic sites, useful for understanding the moment of transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age on the island. It is poetically, but not scientifically, identified with the ancient Hybla, a Sicilian kingdom that from the 13th to the 8th century BC that extended from the Anapo valley to Syracuse.
The site is located on a plateau, surrounded by canyons formed over the millennia by two rivers, the Anapo and the Calcinara, which determined the canyon-like topography of the area.
The site is characterized by a necropolis consisting of more than 5000 small tombs excavated in the rocky wall overlooking the canyons carved by the rivers. The tombs, carved with the shape of small windows, were sealed after the deposition of the defunct along with some goods and potteries.

I decided to go there at night to capture the atmosphere and hopefully the history of this enchanting location. I placed my tripod on a very narrow pathway carved on edge of a cliff (bottom right hand side). I was alone with the fragrancies of the Mediterranean plants and only the sound of the flowing water at the bottom of the valley where the graves have been carved (small black dots mainly visible in the white rocks at the center). I felt like being in a dream thinking at those people living there under the dark sky illuminated only by the light of their fires and the stars’ twinkle of the milky way.

The World at Night project
A night in the far north in early March. This spectacular glacier in southeast Iceland became alive at dark with aurora borealis shining gently on it. The frozen lagoon is on the foot of 2110-meter high ice-covered Oraefajokull volcano, within the Vatnajokull National Park.
Even to me who travels twice a year to Iceland for aurora photo workshops, this was a stunning night as aurora activity increased to storm level. Follow me @babaktafreshi to explore the beauties and wonders after dark.
