Eugenio Rosi | 2010 | “Esegesi” | Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot | Trentino, Italy | purchased from Needham Center Fine Wines, Needham, MA
This blood-dark piece of winemaking brilliance has a lifetime of a drinking arc. Pours leggy and deep red with aromas of leather, sage, and currant that are tempered by mint that just barely comes through when the bottle is freshly opened; a couple hours later, the aromas get meatier like A1, Sunday roast, mince pie... kind of meatyfruity and for as weird as that may sound, it’s lusciousness is super inviting.
The sip, when first opened, is really soft and delicate. It’s nice to drink, but after letting it open I regret having had any pre-decant. Given time, the varnishy sheen integrates and some serious depth emerges. There’s cola happening with some bitter roots or bark like cherry tree bark. The oak it sees really shows up in a non offensive way, sweet-softened by something like mirin. It can have a peach-fuzzy mouthfeel, but this deviates upon being named. The mint from the first aroma re-emerges here and brings a little pine and angostura with it. @rosi_eugenio@ncfwma#naturalwine#italianwine#trentino#rawwine
IN SPIAGGIA A LEVICO TERME? PERCHE' NO?
⛱🍹🏊♂ #levicoterme#lagodilevico#holiday#family#trentino#instatravel#beach#spiaggia

Few late notes on Friday evening's samples...have I just recovered? 🤪
We started with an elegant complex and refreshing #altalanga classical method (mainly #pinotnoir ) by #paoloavezza from Canelli (South #Piedmont ): just a confirmation that quality of the denomination is growing among Italian bubbles. Then #dolcetto di #ovada 2015 Vigna la Vecchia by #ghio winery in Bisio (between Ovada and Gavi, #AltoMonferrato , South Piedmont), crispy & still young, a great partner with pasta with a rich ragù. Then 3 greeeat wines from Bordeaux blends, to remind us how these grapes can adapt to very different climates/locations and so shape their character. #sanleonardo 2013 ( #CabernetSauvignon 60%, #Carmenere 30%, #Merlot 10%), a top wine from the alpine region of #Trentino , North-East Italy. Not only very intense pepper with some delicate chocolate/tobacco but also intense fresh wild berries; on the palate freshness & saltiness from alpine rocks (Dolomites are close!) complete its aristocratic chatacter. #guadoaltasso#Bolgheri Superiore 2015 (mainly Cab Sauvignon & Merlot with a bit of #CabernetFranc ), a flagship wine of #Tuscany from the legendary #antinori winery, adds further tertiary scents, alcoholic structure, smoothness (but balanced by more tannins)...this is the mild mediterranean climate of Bolgheri, with a pinch of Tuscan nobility, translated into wine. #granenemigo 2010 Gualtallary (mainly Cab Franc with a bit of Malbec) by #BodegaAleanna from #Mendoza , at the feet of the Andes in Argentina: other mountains but a drier climate... a wine of incredibile intensity, complexity, persistence and elegant balance. Simply GREAT.
Finally we came home to the #langhe : #Barolo Ravera 2009 by #flavioroddolo . #Nebbiolo grapes, unlike Bordeaux varieties, do not like to travel much: Ravera is an amazing cru (in Italy we call this bureaucratically a Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva 🙄) in the village of Novello; this, combined with the unconventional personality of the winemaker, gives a masterpiece. Just let it breathe in the glass for 5 minutes and clean up and stretch its full spectrum of aromas... #winetasting#winelovers#wineoclock#winepassion#winetime
