  • Eek! ˈripəl was sold to a collector in Denver. It is an honour to see this large artwork go to its forever home. This piece is one of my absolute favorites that I have ever created and I'm thrilled that even more eyes will get to experience it.
I am forever grateful for this life.

  • Art is a very solitary business.
•
I spend a lot of time alone, doing work behind the scenes. From ideation, to going to the art store to pick up raw materials, to execution in the studio, all of that is opaque to you.
•
You don’t get to see the failures. You don’t get to see the angst, the doubt. The creative process is plagued by insecurity and frustrations.
•
You don’t get to see those.
•
You don’t get to see the moments of euphoria either. When I’ve been stuck forever and I finally find a way to get my colors right. When I find a new way to blend and bend liquids.
•
All of those moments of ecstasy belong to me.
•
But then, once I’m satisfied with a piece, I need to muster up the confidence to share it with other people in the hopes that you’ll manage to squeeze something out of it: a reaction, an emotion, a thought… Positive, or negative.
•
If it’s positive, then as an artist, you can revel in the praise or be plagued by the idea that you are a fraud. Or, if it’s negative, you have to wonder whether your work is terrible or if people just didn’t get it and have to believe that they are wrong (and let’s be honest, it was probably terrible to begin with).
•
But then, once I’ve released it into the world, it doesn’t belong to me anymore. It belongs to you as you view it, study it, bask in it. It’s up to you to accept or refuse what I propose.
•
As you can tell, from the moment you choose to create, as an artist, you enter this wheel of turmoil, from inception to release.
•
And that’s why I am SO grateful to have your support, through the good and the bad. Everything that happens behind the scenes can be extremely nerve-racking. But knowing I have your support makes all of this so much easier to bear!

  • Being environmentally conscious is one of our goals at Cursed By Design. It is easy for a small business to overlook certain things, and there are some that can't be avoided, but where possible we like to make the best decisions we can. Two examples of this on our 3D printing side have to do with the materials we use and how it's packaged.

The "plastic" we use for the 3D printing process is polylactic acid (also known as PLA) which is a biodegradable and bioactive thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable corn starch. Unlike stronger plastics like ABS, there is zero off-gassing and it's printing/melt temperature is much lower resulting in less power consumption. You can read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polylactic_acid

Packaging amounts for a lot of waste when it comes to 3D printing as well. Some of that packaging can be recycled, but some of it can not. Namely, the spool that the filament comes on. It is usually injection molded black ABS plastic which can not be recycled in Toronto. When going through hundreds of spools every quarter, that is a lot of waste. To be more environmentally sound, we use a refill system from Filaments.ca which makes that "throw-away" spool reusable over and over. Over the course of a year, that will amount to over 100kg of plastic waste that is not ending up in a landfill...and we are still just starting out.
These are just little decisions but every little bit counts. Our goal is to do as much as we can to make our footprint on the world huge while keeping our footprint on the environment as small as possible.
