@everydayclimatechange:
Honored to receive a 3rd prize in the Norwegian Picture of the Year this weekend for this image:
 Photo by Orjan Ellingvag (@ellingvag) for @everydayclimatechange. Two persons can be seen at the entrance of a glacier ice cave at the mouth of the Rhone Glacier in Switzerland. The ice cave and the surrounding glacier are covered every year with huge sheets of fleece blankets to slow down the inevitable melting of the glacier due to warmer climate.
A popular tourist attraction since the 1870s, the glacier is now disappearing fast. With higher mean temperatures and lack of precipitation, the Rhone Glacier is shrinking dramatically. An exceptionally snowy winter was not enough to offset the extreme summer, which caused glaciers to lose 2.5% of their volume, the Swiss Academy of Sciences reported in October 2018. While it has been reported that the glacier was covered in white fleece blankets to save the glacier from the effects of climate change, it is a misnomer. The ice tunnel at the mouth of the glacier is privately owned by the Carlen family, who have maintained it since the 1870s. For the last twenty years they have organized a massive effort to cover the man-made ice grotto in fleece blankets to keep the tunnel from melting. Once an effort to save their business, today the fleece covered cave attracts more and more tourists worried about global warming and wanting to see the remnants of a dying glacier.

The Rhone Glacier feeds into the river Rhone, and is the source for Lake Geneva (Lac Léman). Since 1856, the glacier has lost more than 350 meters in thickness, and have receded more than a mile. The Alps are known as the water tower of Europe, and they are in trouble. The winter of 2017/2018 saw record amounts of snow in the alps, but the snow gain was already eliminated by the end of May, when all the new snow had melted.

Ders alıp her zaman önüne bakacaksın.
