"Can We Talk" is a nice midtempo new jack groove from R&B vocalist Tevin Campbell, the lead single from his 1993 sophomore album "I'm Ready". Written and produced by the always reliable hitmaker Babyface (with help from Daryl Simmons), the song was a hit on both pop and R&B Billboard charts and remains one of Campbell's best known and frequently covered tracks.
Originating from the Dallas, Texas area, Tevin began his musical career from a very early age, performing solos and harmonies with his church's gospel choir. At age 11 he auditioned for jazz singer and flutist Bobbi Humphrey, which led to meetings with Benny Medina of Warner Bros. and music legend Quincy Jones.
Jones produced Tevin's debut song, Tomorrow, which acted as the lead single from Quincy's acclaimed 1991 ensemble album, Back on the Block. This introduced Tevin to the world in a big way.
Q would go on to executive produce Campbell's debut album, T.E.V.I.N., tapping the talents of other musical powerhouses like Al. B. Sure and Prince (who produced the eventual Tevin signature song, "Round and Round"). The success of this album and its follow-up, along with his youthful charm and likability, made Campbell a crossover star and household name. #thestylesreport@mkstyles#tevincampbell#imready#canwetalk#grownfolksmusic#soul#rhythmandblues#rnb#newjackswing#midtempo#billboard#rnbpop#babyface#darylsimmons#quincyjones@babyface
#tbt I often think of where life has taken people since you saw them last. This photo was taken by @lgeare (Laurel Geare) in an artist loft in downtown LA sometime in 2013. Now Laurel is getting married and becoming a mother of twins! As for me, well, that’s way too lengthy to mention on an Instagram post. :) The earrings went to Goodwill, but the guitar has stayed with me. #guitarplayer#rhythmandblues#americanamusic#bluesmusic
“Soon As I Get Home” is a gorgeous slow jam from Newark’s own R&B songstress Faith Evans. Released as the second single from her 1995 debut Faith, this track helped cement her place as both the “First Lady of Bad Boy” and as one of the foremost R&B artists of the mid-90s through early 2000s era.
Co-written by Faith and Puff Daddy, and produced by the latter alongside prolific hip-hop and R&B producer Chucky Thompson, the song is a masterwork of contemporary 90s urban soul. The mooglike synth chords pair beautifully with crisp hip hop hard snares. This beat provides a soul stirring backdrop for Faith’s effortlessly emotive and powerful vocals.
I love the elegant simplicity of the accompanying music video as well. Directed by veteran video director Marcus Raboy, the alternating visuals of a rainy cityscape and dreamlike closeups of Faith in a white mink complement the song well and heighten the sense of longing and loss conveyed by the song’s lyrics.
The smoothness of this track provided a nice contrast to Evan’s first single, the bouncy midtempo smash “You Used To Love Me”. Both tracks hit big on Billboard, helped propel Faith’s debut album to platinum status, and launched an illustrious career spanning over two decades and 18 million record sales worldwide.
