On the 19th of March, Alphabet (Google’s parent company) announced the revolutionary new gaming platform Google Stadia. The Google Stadia is a browser-based game streaming service, where the data is handled by the cloud at Google’s services, rather than a console as offered by the major players in the gaming industry, the PlayStation and Xbox. The technology is said to allow users to play games over the internet, without needing to download the game beforehand. This has the potential to make playing games at 4k resolution and 60 fps as easy as watching a YouTube video or reading an article. Google is set to launch this service by the end of 2019 but has not released any details on the pricing for Google Stadia. #politics#news#currentevents#politica#politik#politicalscience#politicalcompass#balancetheballot#youth#voting#mun#debate#discussion#politicaldebate
Born June 21, 1983 Edward Snowden is an American computer scientist, former CIA employee, former American intelligence contractor, and to some a patriot who is best known for his reveal of classified NSA information in 2013. Snowden took national spotlight when he revealed multiple global surveillance programs ran by the NSA and Five Eyes Intelligence Agency. After working for the NSA, Snowden went to Hong Kong to meet with journalists to reveal classified NSA documents to The Washington Post and The Guardian. After revealing classified information, the US government charged Snowden with espionage and theft of government information. In response, Snowden escaped to Russia seeking asylum. Edward Snowden’s current whereabouts are unknown, many speculating that he lives in Moscow. Edward Snowden is the subject of an international debate over government secrecy and surveillance. Snowden is many things to many people; he has been called a whistleblower, patriot, traitor and American hero.

BERSAMA ROMY PAKAI ROMPI
Oleh HANIF KRISTIANTO
Bung Romy akhirnya bernyanyi
Pasca trending topic menanyakan dirimu #RomyJumatanDimana
Bersama dua kawan yang ikhlas beramal
Tim pemburu KPK menangkap tangan
Bung Romy tak sendiri
Rompi oranye dipakai pasti
Kaca mata hitam kini menghiasi
Juling mata yang menerawang siapa saja
Bung Romy menyeret nama-nama
Siapa Gubernur Jatim yang dinyana?
Siapa kyai pondok pesantren yang diminta?
Menentukan posisi kepala kantor wilayah
Tampaknya akan banyak teman dekat
Bersama bung Romy pakai rompi
Rajutan tebal oranye
Dari lembaga berani jujur itu hebat
Bung Romy merasa dijebak
Korban keganasan politik persekongkolan
Multi efek lembaga kementrian
Ruang penyedot demi nyawa kepartaian
Berlaku ikhlas berjamaah korupsian
Pangkal cinta dunia daripada membela agama
Korupsi.... Si Korup
Si Korup.... Korupsi
Nyanyian demokrasi basi
Gelak tawa politisi pamrih
Berdiri di atas penderitaan rakyat
Tak pernah jujur demi rakyat
Bersama Romy pakai rompi
Siapa orang berikutnya?
Menyandera kawan koalisi
Menakuti jeruji besi
Ah... Korupsi tiada henti di negeri ini
At @sxsw, One of the feature films I got to introduce and Q&A was #knockdownthehouse , a documentary that followed the primary campaigns of #alexandriaocasiocortez , @amy4thepeople, @coribush, and @paulajeanswearengin. It was directed by Rachel Lears and produce red by Sarah Olson (pictured here!!). These women are part of the forefront of our national wide movement to give the government back to WE THE PEOPLE. Even though Mueller’s report had conclude, I hope that people understand they should not expect to be “SAVED” by someone else. They should participate in changing the system to work FOR them like it was intended to do. We will only be right back where we started if we do not learn this. And to these women and many others across the country did, you should join the grassroots fight✊🏿 #fbf

The Prime Minister of Finland, Juha Sipilä, announced on March 8th, 37 days before the general elections, that the coalition government would resign. Finland previously has had a very devoted health care system but "spending has declined over recent years" and future growth in spending was also seeked to be reduced (Reuters). Furthermore, this government was not able to pass thorough reforms in health and social care that it perceived as necessary. Other issues include other "budget cuts", workers having to do more work for lower income, the "penalizing" of "jobless people who fail to show they are actively seeking to improve their situation,” and allowing for more competitiveness between taxi companies (Bloomberg). Hence, 60% of Finish people, according to a poll by newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, is said to agree with the resignation of the government. The government will still perform its functions as a "caretaker" before the elections take place. EU leaders have agreed on a plan to postpone Brexit beyond the 29 of March until 2 May if MPs approve the withdrawal deal negotiated with the EU next week. If the deal is not agreed upon, the EU will allow for a delay until 12 April to give the UK time to either get the deal through or to suggest a new plan for the future. Theresa May has stated that MPs now face a clear choice: either to support the withdrawal deal and allow Brexit to proceed in an ‘orderly manner’ or face the potential to partake in European elections. May further stated that she ‘will make every effort to make sure we can leave with a deal and move our country forward’. European Council President Donald Tusk has revealed that until 12 April, all options are viable to the UK government whether that be a deal, a no deal, a long extension or the revetment of Article 50, the article stating the procedure for member withdrawal from the EU. Following this date, if the UK has not decided whether to partake in European parliamentary election, the possibility of a further extension will become ‘impossible’. #politics#news#currentevents#politica#politik#politicalscience#politicalcompass#balancetheballot#youth#voting#mun#debate#discussion#politicaldebate

Looking for an interesting and informative event to attend on campus? Consider attending "Gateway to Equality: Black Women and the Struggle for Economic Justice in St. Louis." Hosted by Keona K. Ervin, Ph.D. on Monday, March 25 at 6 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium. “To celebrate Women's History Month 2019, Keona K. Ervin will examine one history of Black women's leadership in our region based on her book “Gateway to Equality: Black Women and the Struggle for Economic Justice in St. Louis” (U of Kentucky Press, 2017) which won the 2018 Missouri History Book Award. From the 1930s to 1960s, Black women formed a community-based culture of resistance to fight for employment, a living wage, dignity, representation, and political leadership. Their politics played an important role in defining urban political agendas. Professor Ervin sheds light on the overlapping civil rights and labor movements during the first half of the 20th century.” Don’t miss this wonderful event.

Thank you to Dr. Michael Horowitz for visiting #Rio as a guest faculty lecturer this week! Dr. Horowitz is a professor of #politicalscience and associate director of Perry World House at the University of Pennsylvania @uofpenn as well as the son-in-law of our own Dr. Vicki Crooks! Dr. Horowitz's talk focused on "America's Role in a Changing World."

On March 20, 2019, a bus carrying 51 schoolchildren was hijacked by its driver and set alight on the outskirts of Milan, Italy. The bus driver Ousseynou Sy, a 47-year-old Italian citizen, was arrested shortly after the incident. Sy, armed with a cigarette lighter and two canisters filled with petrol, had tied the children up with electric cable. Local authorities reported that petrol had been spread around the bus in an attempt to set it ablaze with the children inside. Italian authorities were able to smash the rear windows and let the passengers off before the bus burst into flames. 12 students suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure. The suspect’s motive for the hijack is still unclear. Reports have suggested however that the bus driver was angry about Italy’s migrant policy. Police spokesman Marco Palmieri declared in a statement that the suspect had shouted "stop the deaths in the Mediterranean" during the incident that lasted over 40 minutes. #politics#news#currentevents#politica#politik#politicalscience#politicalcompass#balancetheballot#youth#voting#mun#debate#discussion#politicaldebate#schoolbus#bus#hijack#italy#milan#migrant#policy#arrest#students#fire

The 2008 Financial crisis was the worst crisis since the 1930s Great Depression, and was followed by a slowdown nicknamed the Great Recession. Within two years, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, an index many consider to be a barometer for the economy, reached historically highest and lowest points. Prior to the crisis, the economy saw record levels of the issuance of loans, doubling the amount of debt within 7 years. A majority of these loans were used for speculation and purchasing real estate, 51% going to properties and 32% going back to the financial sector. As a result, home prices started soaring. However, the majority of loans issued had high risks of default, which are called subprime mortgages. At one point, oversaturation in the market led to the decline of home prices, causing many of these subprime mortgages to default. As mortgages defaulted around the world, banks started going bankrupt. After the crisis, banks lost confidence and limited lending, slowing down the economy. The failures led to a $700 billion bailout package by the fed, and saw a 31.8% decline in home prices along with a 9% unemployment rate. #politics#news#currentevents#politica#politik#politicalscience#politicalcompass#balancetheballot#youth#voting#mun#debate#discussion#politcaldebate#greatrecession#wallstreet#money#finance#subprime
The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) is the first global health treaty negotiated under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO). The FCTC is one of the most quickly ratified treaties in U.N. history and it aims to “protect present and future generations from the devastating health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke” by setting worldwide standards stating the dangers of tobacco and limiting its use. The WHO FCTC sets rules regarding the production, sale, distribution, advertisement, taxation and foreign investments of tobacco products. The treaty was adopted at the 56th World Health Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland on May 21, 2003, and became effective on February 27, 2005. It has been signed by 168 countries and is legally binding in 181 ratifying countries. There are currently 15 U.N. states that are non-parties to the treaty including Argentina, Switzerland, the United States, Indonesia, Monaco and more. #politics#news#currentevents#politica#politik#politicalscience#politicalcompass#balancetheballot#youth#voting#mun#debate#discussion#politcaldebate#whofctc#who#tobacco#unitednations#health
