Pine Branch with a Bow .
This would be a lovely subject to make into a holiday card.
I always encourage my students to paint and create their own Holiday cards as they are so meaningful for the recipients who often frame them🎁♥️.

  • Green over a Snirt pile...
Snirt became a new word that refers to the blend of snow and dirt - gravel mixture. Snirt can be seen quite often in parking lots and along the side of roads and curbs. I guess you can say that it's quite snow, not quite dirt, so it's "Snirt." I know it's weird, it was a few years back when I came across snirt and the idea to start looking closer at this as it began to fill up the parking lots and one day I was walking through a lot on a fairly hot winter-spring type day and the sun was in the perfect spot to shine through the piles and edges of Snirt, which in turn, turned these piles of gravel-dirt and plowed snow into a photograph that shinned with colour and brightness. When these piles and clumps of mixed dirt and snow begin to melt then freeze several times, they begin to take on so many different forms and textures. When one takes the time to lean down and look closely at these piles and small mountains of unwanted parking lot left over snow, you see something unique. With more of the photographs I take of "Snirt" they become "Snirt-Art" that we all pass by on a winter's day during our rush to get to our vehicles to avoid mother natures winter chill.

  • A customer, turned friend, requested a new design....
A pinecone.
I love nature and the shape of a pinecone. “Absolutely!” I responded.
Though when it was time to make the pinecone, I found myself stumped.
A pinecone is an all brown, oval...
Not much room for expression & color in a mosaic.
It was similar to a brown stick... or a rock.
Again, things I love, but how do I pull off making it into an interesting mosaic?
I mulled it over for sometime and initially thought I would try it “Andy Warhol” style.. the color of pop music. It would be tricky to make that in mosaic, with unnatural colors... I wasn’t sure the eye would make the association/connection, but hey, I’m always up for a new challenge & experiment.
I went about to set up my table and look for a rock.
The first rock I noticed was this one that has been literally, hanging off my shelf for a year.
Within the rock, i saw the drape of the pine branch...The way it looks as it hangs from a tree or how the branch might look hanging off a window sill or mantle and then💥.
I suddenly & finally knew how to mosaic a pinecone.
I loved creating this piece because it was all defined & inspired by the rock. Going back to what started this craziness, this obsession!
Typically these days, I mostly gather blank canvases for rocks... rocks that will fit a number of designs. yet I always come back with a select few, some with special shape or that just talk to me & just hang them off the shelf and wait.
