Birds (and images of birds) have held symbolic value throughout civilization and across nearly every culture imaginable. A symbol of freedom, birds both walk the earth and soar through the skies, representing the link between heaven and earth. Many specific types of birds have been attributed with mystical powers or traits, dependant upon the culture, with ravens and crows enjoying a special place in the annals of history as portents of misfortune and death, but they can also represent higher intelligence, destiny, magic and mystery.
'Craww' is the rather apt working title of Sheffield-based painter and illustrator, Shaun Friend, whose elegant and darkly atmospheric paintings and drawings evoke those primal connections with the avian harbingers of fortune. Craww's sumptuous compositions play on the concepts of balance and flux, the eternal cycle of decay and rebirth, the intangible and the immediate, the light and the long shadow it casts. .
With a background in advertising and commercial graphic design, Shaun found himself yearning for complete control over his creative output after years of having his ideas trampled by faces in suits. After humble beginnings selling a handful of prints in his local print shop, Craww's work began to garner attention internationally and was soon to be found gracing galleries throughout the world, with exhibitions in Europe, Japan, Australia and throughout the USA and UK. .

Day 25 | How it’s made | #marchmeetthemaker
At the heart of everything I make, is drawing. The simplicity of pencil and paper is something I always start with. This part is at the core of how I began as an artist, and is the anchor for everything that I create. It’s what lays the foundation for my individual style and vision. It is also at the center point of how I tell the story of each piece. From sketch to final outline, drawing is where I am able to study my subject, and find the characteristics that make them come alive. #nmsgallery#rochesternyartist
