  • So, when I got back to writing my next novel, it started out okay. However, 10,000 words in, I started not feeling it. 😞 I placed the novel on pause as I brainstormed ways to make it work. But my intuition knew it wasn’t right. Then, I got together with my romcom-movie-lover-daughter @abreakfromrealitygirl and she helped me sort out the problem and voila, a brand new novel emerged! I’m SO pumped about the new plot.
.
If you’re stuck, listen to your intuition, it will show you the way. 💻

(Are you one of those “doing something every day no matter what’ers”, a “structure routine bot”, Or are you a “do it as you feel it” type?! 📝🕯
.

Even if it’s just plotting, planning, and/or listening to audiobooks and podcast. Do SOmETHiNG daily. .

I have a whole series of routines waiting in queue for the moment I’m not able to attack my current WIP. .

There is just rarely a moment where I veg out on anything anymore. I start feeling guilty if I’m not working towards my goals.
.

As far as inspiration goes.. the more I learn, and the deeper I go into this passion.. the more I am able to pull inspiration directly out of thin air and apply it to what ever needed a bump. If anything I get too inspired and have had to seriously take a look in the mind mirror and tinker around up there to try fix a few gears. Staying on one task freaks me out, but I work everyday at it and I feel like it’s helping 👽)

Screenwriting tip for today...“Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.” -Picassso.

StIck to a schedule. When you sit with your characters, they will lead the way and you follow. .

Going to the @awpwriter conference in Portland this week? Looking for inspiration + honest talk about writing novels? Join me, and few of my favorite writers, on Saturday morning, including @gabriel.packard @brandonlgtaylor @vu.h.tran & #LanSamanthaChang director of @theiowawriterswksp — also the first of my teachers who, many years ago, taught me how to “think like a novelist.”
Hope to see many @sackettstreet alums at #AWP19 - please stop by the SSWW bookfair to say hello.

Twyla Tharp said "Solitude is an unavoidable part of creativity. Self-reliance is a happy by-product." The novelist is on her/his own, in the dark searching for the proverbial light switch, not always able to rely on workshop feedback where some MFA programs encourage writers to submit short fiction only. Published authors and teachers of novel writing discuss how to maintain motivation until the light goes on, and give advice on every stage of writing a novel, from first drafts to publication.

  • i’ve found it’s hard to sum up my wip in just a few sentences. that’s not me saying ~it’s so CoMpLiCaTeD~ but moreso, i’m always nervous to say the right thing to prove to people that it’s a legitimate project i’m working on and it’s something that i hope interests others but of course, the uncertainty of the latter is what’s intimidating. nonetheless, i figured i’d take today’s post to explain it a bit more!!⁣⁣
as i’ve mentioned in past posts, the very basic premise of my book is: it’s about a relationship and it’s told from two perspectives, the one taking place right at the start of the relationship and the other right after it ends.⁣⁣
it kind of starts right in the middle of the action. like, literally. it starts with lennon approaching this guy she’s liked for a while and striking a conversation, which ends with them getting spontaneous tattoos on new years eve in san diego. from there, it’s mostly just watching their relationship blossom and how much finley’s lifestyle and friend group changes an arguably very impressionable lennon, to the point of their break up. which brings me to...⁣⁣
the alternate perspective! finley’s perspective starts in the same manner: his friend and band mate is about to propose to her girlfriend, just hours after finley got broken up with. there’s no reasoning told to the reader or anything but you get a feel for his band, his lack of family life, his borderline obsessive thoughts, and his drug habits, to put it lightly. you see him and lennon in a different, somber light which turns complicated pretty quickly when they decide to pretend like they didn’t break up in order to spare their friends for a little while longer.⁣⁣
and that’s that, i suppose! 😅⁣

Discussion thread: what are your favourite books? What makes them amazing? Is it the character development? The plot twists? The wording?
I’m currently thinking about my novel (in process) and am trying to dissect what makes a book beloved by all.

  • Take your readers on a journey 🛫
People read novels to be entertained and escape into the magic of an imaginary world. When developing your plot, focus on the journey you want your readers to take. -

What’s one novel that comes to mind that has impacted you? ❤️

  • Happy Monday! Today has been a busy day and I am finally sitting down to crank out my homework for the day. Spring break is over and I am so sad! I didn’t get as much writing done as I had hoped (probably because I played sims and watched Criminal Minds & Jurassic Parks 1, 4, 5 (I’d never seen these films before and OMG I LOVE THEM)). Today I will finish my homework and get to finishing up my final rewrite chapter 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 Eeep! I’m so excited to finally finish these up!

All artists doubt their skills at some point or another. If you're struggling through that now and have quit writing as a result, I'm here to tell you that you should start again.

Writing is a skill. To get better at it, you need to practice. You need to get feedback. You need to study. Giving it up doesn't fit anywhere in that equation.

If you wish you could be a writer or have ever tried to write a story and felt like you failed, all that means is you still have a story that's waiting to get out. So, here are the steps to get started:

1) Write your first draft without considering if it's any good. Simply write. Get the story out.

2) Once you've finished your first draft, take at least a week away from your story but longer if possible. Don't read it, don't work on it, don't think about it. This will help you create distance from the story and, as a result, a more objective viewpoint.

3) Read through your story and make large edits. Fix plot holes and story inconsistencies, add depth to your characters, and so on.

4) Let a trusted friend or family member read the story and provide feedback. Even better, let several people read your story and provide feedback. They don't have to be writers themselves; they simply have to have a desire to read your story and a willingness to be honest with you.

5) Once they've finished reading the story, sit down with them and discuss what they thought was working and not working (NOT what they liked or didn't like). This will help them give you more objective feedback.

6) Make edits based on their feedback.

7) Repeat steps 4-6 until you're feeling satisfied with your story.
