💡 "How to Fill a Raised Bed: Build the Perfect Organic Soil" was just added to Homestead and Chill. This article is a follow-up to accompany the one all about building raised beds posted earlier this week. 🤘🏼

Read along to learn how we craft and build our ideal soil, including tips about soil types, ratios of compost or aeration to add, natural amendments and mild plant-based fertilizers that we utilize. The same principles can be applied to filling containers like grow bags or wine barrels!

Have you already filled your rasied beds with less-than-ideal soil? No worries! I have tips on how you can amend and improve it.

  • Fresh Basil, Tomatoes, Borage, Lemon Basil, Dill, Melons and Zucchini Decorate the Boxes as the Kiddos and Kittens play Hide and Seek in the Garden!❤️ having 3’ in between the boxes has worked out really nice for us. By the end of the season, you can hardly make it through some of the isles.

  • Meet Natalie @nat_nomad from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada 🇨🇦 “I was born and raised in Germany, where after high school I went off to university like most kids do. Studying Environmental Sciences, I thought I was on the right path to fulfill my dreams of changing the world. It didn't take long for me to realize, that instead of learning all the cool skills I had imagined, I was really being prepared to work a corporate job – and I did not like that at all. So I made a radical decision, that would change everything. I quit university, created a list of what I really wanted to learn, and looked for people around the world who are experienced in those different fields and who would be willing to teach me. Happily overwhelmed with amazing responses, I packed my bag and moved to Canada, to be a volunteer in exchange for the information I so deeply desired.

Lead by my intuition, I arrived on a small family operated farm on Vancouver Island, where I was hoping to learn how to grow food. Little did I know I would not only find a magnificent gardening mentor who is now my mother-in-law, but also the love of my life, my now husband.
On our ½ acre organic farm, we grow a large variety of different vegetables and fruit for our own family, and also to sell at our local farmer’s market. We are constantly striving to establish more and stronger permaculture oriented systems, especially when it comes to water management, crop rotation and making our own fertilizers. What I love most about what I do, is being able to combine practicality with creativity as well as the deep connection to nature I've been able to establish through growing food.

I am now three years into my farming journey, and my passion for building community through local food is only becoming stronger every day. I finally feel like I found a way to change the world – while acting locally but thinking globally. One day, I hope to become a teacher and mentor myself, to inspire young people to look into alternative lifestyles and GROW FOOD for an abundant future.” @humanswhogrowfood features stories of home gardeners, farmers & community gardens across borders & cultures.
