at a restaurant known to have a strong wine program, take a chance 🎰 on a completely unfamiliar wine at the economical end of the list. last night at gramercy tavern I spun the wheel with this pet-nat sparkler from Virginia and came up a winner ✨. 2018 Early Mountain Malvasia Bianca Pet-Nat: Delicate, orange blossom/peachy, with a wash of refreshing crispness - outrageously good with Gramercy Tavern's roasted oysters with kale, chile, and grana padano. .
#gramercytavern has a prix fixe format of three courses with a reasonably wide selection and also a tasting menu of five courses. There is no a la carte option. I quite like this format as it means the restaurant is super efficient and they can do an high turnover while maintaining great quality. We had the three course option and all the dishes were very tasty and well executed. You can see why this place has legendary status in the New York dining scene because it's been on top of its game for over two decades. On a Sunday night its packed to the rafters and feels like a buzzy Friday evening! Amazing. Back in 2004, I never gave much thought to the fact that the kitchen at Gramercy Tavern was heavily populated with women. To me, they were all just fellow cooks- cooks with whom I shared my every day, often feeling like we were in the trenches preparing for war. I remember the burns that tattooed themselves onto our arms and hands, the countless hours we spent sweating over hot stoves and open flames, the family meals we shoveled into our faces if we were lucky enough to have a few free seconds before service time. Much like Jiu Jitsu, relationships in the kitchen are forged over blood, sweat and tears. Yesterday. Last of the three Gramercy Tavern market lunches focused on potatoes🥔 Three delicious savory courses and a dessert with honey coated potato chips. Wines with each course. My poor photography skills with the blurry 4th bottle. It is pink label Champagne Billecart-Salmon, Demi-Sec, made only for Gramercy Tavern. Sometimes you just have to grab lunch at a local favorite 🙌🏻 @gramercytavern did not disappoint- Aside from the fantastic service, the vibe is the perfect balance of finer things and chill. With fresh flowers 🌸 and a nice selection of jazz 🎶 as well as an attentive and gentle staff, you feel welcome and comfortable. Meal 🥘 included:
• Squid Ink Spacatelle with chorizo, brussel sprouts, and lobster 🦞 • Angel 😇 Bread 🥖 with a butter and goat cheese spread
• Gramercy Tavern Burger 🍔 with onion rings, Raclette cheese, and mushrooms.
• La Corse- a fruity and light wine from Australia 🇦🇺 🍷 made from Sangiovese, Grenache, Sciacarello, and Malbec
• Sour Cherry 🍒 Rugelach
While everything was delicious 😋, the angel bread was so soft and fluffy it’s no reason they call it something ethereal!!! Love ❤️ this place!
