When I was a teenager, my family took a road trip out to Utah to explore and hike the desert landscapes. One of our objectives: explore some of the southwest's legendary slot canyons. Maybe the resources weren't as good back then, or maybe we just didn't do enough research, but we only found one. It was enough to convince me that canyons were phenomenal wonders of nature though, and I needed to explore more of them at some point.
Fast forward about 20 years, and I still hadn't done any proper canyoneering. Much like climbing, it just isn't the type of thing you go do on your own without a guide or a friend that knows the ropes.
I've been lucky enough to meet some awesome people that are into some really cool things lately though and one of those was canyoneering guide @tylerjaymiller! So when we were going to be in his area, @freedomthevanbulance and I hit him up to do some canyoneering.
We got our feet wet (and a bit more) in Keyhole Canyon, then moved on to the iconic Pine Creek. Being a bit early in the season, we were equipped with dry suits, but missed the oh-so-important neoprene gloves. Tyler is a penguin and never seemed to flinch at the cold, but Lee and I were in a constant battle to keep our hands dry and warm enough to operate carabiners and safely rappel. Luckily we've watched enough Bear Grylls to know that the secret was to keep moving and keep the blood flowing, so we casually passed the time we weren't swimming or rappelling by dancing, doing jumping jacks and enjoying some canyon parkour with Megan 😅
The warm breeze blowing up through the canyon as we descended down the final free hanging rappel was a welcome change. The whole thing was an amazing experience that I won't soon forget, and I'll definitely be doing more canyoneering in the future.
❤️Cardio workouts have a place in your fitness routine. Especially if you spend most of the day sitting, or just not able to move around too much.
If you start your cardio workout feeling a little sluggish, don't be discouraged, because within 10 to 15 minutes you'll be feeling that boost of energy.
Cardio matters, so here’s some tips and benefits:
Tip: Do some type of cardio at least 20 minutes most days to increase your energy and metabolic rate.
Benefit: Reduces excess body fat and releases endorphins, the feel good chemicals in your brain.
Tip: Intensify your effort in short spurts to increase heart and lung health.
Benefit: Helps to reduce the risk of coronary artery disease by lowering high blood pressure and high cholesterol and increases lung capacity.
Tip: If walking outside do intervals of skipping and swing your arms higher.
Benefit: Strengthens the skeletal system which helps to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and helps to increase joint range of motion.
Tip: Walk after eating breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Benefit: Helps with digestion by allowing your food to process better.
If you're not able to do cardio for 20 or 30 minutes straight then break it down into 10 minute intervals. The important thing here is to just get it done!❤️❤️.
