  • Lots of you agreed with me yesterday about loving homegrown flowers & books so I'm wondering if you have any great book recommendations? My absolute favourite book that combines the two is 'The Thoughtful Gardener' by @jinny.blom however I haven't been really captured by any fiction that I have read this year. Would love to know if you have favourite books? 🌸

  • Our St. Patrick's Day cabbage was so sweet and crunchy. Homegrown cabbage has a flavor that is absolutely topnotch. It's almost as sweet as a sugar snap pea 🥬. We removed the outer leaves, added them to our compost and gave some to the quail for snacking. The remaining head weighed 2.25 lbs. I sauteed it for a side dish and shaved the extras for chopped salads this week. Anyone else love cabbage? How do you enjoy eating it?🌱

This week our mission is to eat all the cool season veggies we can to further make room for summer veggies. This will include lots of cabbage, kale, napa cabbage, romaine, peas, fava beans, and leeks. 💛🌿

  • I feel very lucky to still be picking gorgeous sweet peas in the garden & having bouquets filled with their beautiful nostalgic scent. They have been flowering for many months now & the plants are all madly trying to set seed at the moment but I think I will still get another few weeks of their lovely blooms. 💕🌸

  • I’m dreaming all things trellises, archways & arbors today. All winter, Cobbs & I have meandered all about our woods eyeing out saplings & branches we can use for our garden architecture. We have a small window of opportunity where our nearing mud season actually can help us a bit. As soon as the snow melts & ground thaws, it’ll be a mud pit…but one where I can spear a sapling a good foot into the ground…ideal for anchoring my vertical growing structures. As fast as mud season rolls in, it rolls right back out, leaving the ground to harden all around the sapling trellises, locking them in for the season.

This year I’ll need more than ever partly because of my obsession with Runner Beans. Look at them…they’re magic beans🤩 I swear these were what Jack in the Beanstalk must have been talking about. I’m growing my usual favorite, Scarlet Emperor, along with Sunset, Painted Lady & Achievement. Runner Beans are a very rewarding vine to grow if you want to add a little instant whimsy & charm to your garden. They’ll quickly make themselves at home growing up whatever structure you choose. And you hummingbird friends will thank you for providing them with one of their favorite treats!
Cups & Saucers vine is my newest obsession for the upcoming season. I gaze at my seedlings, as I plan a 10’ tall by 25’ wide wall of them that you’ll have to pass through before you can enter my garden…fingers crossed for my secret garden dreams to come true!

I’m purposely not sowing any Morning Glories because Mother Nature will sow enough for me. I’ll be starting some Cardinal & Thunbergia vines this week. Getting a bit giddy!

What’s your favorite vine to grow?💚

  • As stunning as the popular Cafe Au Lait Dahlias are I have found it really hard to match their creamy brown tones with other flowers in the bouquets. Some of the Autumn tones that I found in the garden yesterday were the best I have found yet to go with them...Sedum which is just starting to colour up, chocolate cosmos, hazelnut leaves, clematis tendrils, & wild blackberries which are just beginning to ripen. Do you grow them? What do you like to put them with? 💕💐

  • The plan is that this view will change considerably over the next few weeks as things start to grow.
Meanwhile prep for vegetable growing is underway, jute netting for beans is up, & half the compost bin is being emptied into the raised vegetable beds ...... & I’m spending far too much time fashioning cloches out of foraged twigs, when I should be sowing seeds! See my stories.
Btw jute netting can be added to compost bin after use.
How are you getting on in your garden?

  • Dinner tonight will be ‘an all from the garden’ affair. A vegetable pie type thingy with eggs from our chickens and loaded with corn, spinach, leek, grated carrot and zucchini and topped with lots of tomatoes and some grated cheese. They’ll be a side of oven baked potato chips and tomato sauce as well kale gently fried with garlic. Afterwards there’s the Autumn standard dessert of Apple Crumble. The total cost would probably come in below a couple of dollars, if that. A humble midweek meal but it feels good to eat this way and I couldn’t imagine a life without food coming in from the garden. Sometimes my husband asks me if it’s really worth the time and effort to grow our own food (because his being wants to be in the water, surfing the waves instead of digging in a vegetable garden like my being does) and I give him that ‘are you kidding?’ look and he immediately says ‘yes of course it is!’ because it is, isn’t it? .

  • I've finally finished harvesting and bottling the honey 🍯 We got over 60kgs! That's a lot of jars to sterilise, fill and label. I'm working on the design of the label and will be printing them soon. This is the biggest harvest we've had yet. I'm definitely going to have to sell some of this delicious pure raw local multifloral honey (any more keywords I can jam in there? Lol) 😋❤️🍯🐝

  • for me ♥️ It’s our wedding anniversary and I’m celebrating happiness and love with a wonderful man who never could’ve imagined back then that he’d be marrying into a world of flowers.
I was an art teacher on maternity leave who made her own bouquet of white lilies and twisty willow. We had before photos with our best man/son and baby boy. So much to think about that when we arrived at the ceremony, I realised I’d left my bouquet on the bench at home! The string quartet had started playing as we did a quick drive by and shot back to get it.
Fifteen years down the track and I’ve made myself another bouquet, with everything picked from my garden. It’s the sort of bouq I’d have if I was getting married again but I wouldn’t change the husband for quids.

  • This green pizza is giving me all the spring vibes 🌼🌱🌈⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Starting off with a broccoli kale crust from @traderjoes , I topped this pizza with my homemade pesto, @kitehillfoods almond ricotta, flowering broccolini, baby chard that I picked fresh from my garden, fresh basil, and red pepper flakes!⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Want to know my secret to a great basil pesto? Add lemon zest! 🍋

  • It's so refreshing whenever you can draw food from your own garden.

Gardening:
 It's not hard but therapeutic.

  • ‘Pastel Purple Anemone’
Today I walked 4 miles there and back to my local Nurseries, found nothing I wanted to buy ( very unusual) walked up my drive and found this beauty in my garden. Photographed it around 3.30pm just before I lost the light and I have to say I’m thrilled!! 💜

  • 💜Received my bag of goodies from Danielle in the middle of the week and after using them I feel like I’ve given myself a mini luxury spa treatment every morning 🌟. From the soap to the deodorant (which actually works even though I had my doubts) to say I’m happy with the products is an understatement. I’ll happily swap all my big brand named products for Danielle’s any day!! 😉....Caitrin 💜The customer says it best 😁
