  • Hello #dfc ! My wcw goes out to this lady here. My parents were hardcore frugal! They literally had #cashenvelopes before I even knew what that was. My dad would give my mom grocery money every week and she would save all her nickels and dimes left over. I was the only daughter of 5, so of course I’m the princess. One day, she saved enough money to buy me a doll at Kmart. She told me to tell my dad I got it from my teacher. Of course, he didn’t believe her. He played bad cop and threw the doll and made her return it (we just didn’t have the luxury to get toys Willy nilly). I remember that day. She drove me back to Kmart and cried all the way there. She cried all the way back home. My mom wanted to give me the world when she couldn’t. She’s pulled so much weight for her family. She worked 7 days a week to pay off mortgage and 2 cars when my dad was laid off for 2 years when I was in elementary. She never made my dad feel less than. She kept her head down and did what she could for her family. It makes me want to succeed so I can give her the world. I pray to be as loving as she is as a mother, a wife, and a genuinely good person. #girlsruntheworld
Edit: I know this was a post to honor my mom, but I wanted to clear some things up about my dad bc Instagram thinks I abused my response button and won’t let me respond anymore lol. The reason he didn’t let us keep the doll is bc he was making $10 an hour as a janitor. (I’ve written about him in an earlier post if you want to read it). He also has 5 kids so it’s not fair if I got something and my broskis didn’t! He ALSO has family back in Vietnam (parents and siblings) that he would send (and still does) money to every 3 months. No I don’t resent my dad. He believed in saving for a greater cause. So although my mom saved for my doll, he didn’t believe in buying things that won’t be needed in a few years. Thanks to his strict budgeting, he made life a lot easier for us. He bought all of us brand new cars when we learned to drive and paid for our insurances up until we found “adult jobs” just wanted to clear the air lol

  • Right now I'm at a point in my life where I really want to take control and propel myself forward into the 'proper' adult world.
I essentially lived paycheck to paycheck until last year when I started saving.
I was so grateful to have my first full time job to help me but it wasn't enough, so I found myself in a recent new job with better pay.
And even though it's way more difficult and some days I'm truly exhausted and stressed out, I try to remember that this was what I wanted and I'm so thankful to have the salary I do.
And of course that this is a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

  • We re-evaluated our financial situation and realized eating out was preventing us from our goals. We spent $107 at the store and its made us a week and will likely get us close to two weeks we just need a few small things. I've successfully packed my husband lunches and cooked dinner every night this week. I'm tempted to be lazy and not but I want to be debt free so badly and I know this is something I have to do! Tonight I was so close to just going and getting us a pizza but instead I made this.

  • Miss Ivy is home from her 4 day stay at the hospital to get a radioactive iodine injection for her hyperthyroid. The most important thing to announce is that her procedure went according to plan! Ivy was not happy to be away from home for 4 days but she is doing great! She will be radioactive until next Thursday so we have to limit lap time to 30 minutes a day which is about what she normally wants anyway! She will need bloodwork done in 1, 3, and 6 months to make sure her thyroid is working as expected and from then on out, she will be good to go!
•
At the beginning of February when we took her in for a cough, we weren’t expecting that less than 2 months later we would be in $2,500 worth of vet expenses. We gladly cash flowed this cost from our emergency fund and are super relieved to have a healthy happy girl!
•
Thanks to everyone who sent me nice messages during me week of sadness! So happy to move past this scary, expensive time! ❤️

  • TGIF - Happy Friday, everyone!
.
Have you ever been to a speed networking event? I'm not always a fan, because it's a little awkward...just like it sounds ;) You talk to each person for a certain amount of time. When time is called, you move onto the next person, and so on. Usually, this format makes it tough to get into a real, deep conversation with anyone.
.
Regardless, I decided to give one a go recently, and was struck by some of the really great questions they provided beforehand. You weren't required to ask the questions, of course, but they were there in case you needed help finding something to talk about. While I only used a few, I made sure I wrote down a few that I thought were good to ponder later. Here are some examples:
.
• What’s the most memorable compliment you’ve ever received at work? And what made it so memorable? Revisiting this question helps remind you of what you are good at and known for. When you're feeling down, pull out that memory and examine it. It'll help boost your self-confidence and get you fired up!
.
• Even though you are a [insert job title] what do you consider to be your expertise? Is that because of education, background, or something else? Think about how you can leverage your expertise. Are you doing that right now? What can you incorporate into your work or lifestyle that will capitalize on these quality?
.
• Right now, what’s the most challenging thing you’re facing? I'm not talking about having issues with excel. I mean like, the BIGGEST thing. Who can help you? A therapist? A mentor? An expert? This question forces you to address your biggest problem head-on and find a solution.
.
These questions make me really think about what fuels my work and my happiness. What are some questions you ask yourself to make sure you're on the right track?

  • Me time - that elusive but necessary beast. Gotta be honest - I’m struggling with it at the moment. But I’ve decided it’s about perception. Take my current example - I’m at dance class waiting for Miss 5 while she does 1.25 hours of classes.
Perception A - I’m stuck here waiting for my kid, ugh I need me time.
Perception B - the baby is at home, so I’m technically solo. I have a latte and my @nintendoswitches to keep me company - let’s call this me time.
Of course I will duck my head in to watch snippets of her class - but they have a closed door policy anyway.
Would I prefer I was on a shopping spree, getting a massage or lunching? Of course! But this me time fits in the schedule, costs me the coffee (which I was getting anyway) so I consider that a big budget win too.

  • Check out these cute paintings my kids did last night! All it cost was $3 to buy the canvas at @dollartree! I had the paints and brushes already at home.
.
I’ve seen the fancy paint studios, where you bring a group and learn to paint together. I’ve always thought they looked SO fun!
But, I just didn’t want to spend that much money!
.
So, I decided to have our own paint night for only $3! We cranked the Disney tunes and talked and laughed and munched on snacks. It was such a fun memorable night and I LOVED watching my kids creativity and confidence develop as they painted their own individual masterpiece.
.
I’ve said it dozens of times before, and I will say it hundreds of times more. You do NOT have to spend a lot of money to make fun memorable moments with your kids! They have all asked me if we could do this again and it was probably one of my favorite memories spent together!
.
*********
What are some of YOUR favorite frugal activities to do with your kids???? I would love more ideas!

  • I would consider myself very frugal and thrifty. But I’m also a total BRAND SNOB! I always have been. Hear me out.
・・・
I prefer on brand items (on food, clothing, household, etc). Not always, but usually. (Of course if something is off brand and totally amazing I’ll use it)...
・・・
I believe in “quality over quantity”.
・・・
👗For example, I have a small wardrobe. But what I do have is great quality, lasts forever... and is usually a brand name. (I’m talking Gap, not Gucci).
・・・
🍪It’s the same with food. I buy Tollhouse chocolate chips instead of the store brand because I think they taste better, and if I’m going to make and eat cookies I want them to be dang good instead of so-so. When I love the food we have and it’s good quality I’m satisfied with it and prevent that feeling of needing more or better.
・・・
🏡It’s the same with household items. When I want something nice and I can’t quite pull off the price, I buy used! I’ve purchased many name brand products this way throughout the years. My new Ergo Baby Carrier was purchased used on Facebook Marketplace, I bought my Blendtec blender on eBay, my favorites Toms slip ons I got from Poshmark.
・・・
I wanted to share this because I have a very modest clothing and household budget, and if you’ve seen any of my food posts you’ll know I have a modest food budget too ($400/mo for my family of 5). But I rarely sacrifice quality. It’s how I like to do it!
・・・
So what’s the point? The point is that it is totally possible to be thrifty and frugal if you’re a brand snob! Here are my tricks:
1️⃣ Have a budget to give you some limits
2️⃣ Shop sales
3️⃣ Shop gently used (Poshmark, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, thrift stores) before buying new
4️⃣ Quality over quantity, stop buying “fluff” items to satisfy your shopping bug and stick to the awesome stuff you really want
5️⃣ Be patient and wait til you can afford what you really want

  • I can’t believe this was already TWO years ago!!
•
When my husband and I attended the Dave Ramsey Smart Money Tour two years ago, we were a little over halfway through our debt free journey. We were honestly losing steam AND motivation. We found out that Dave Ramsey was coming to the city I worked in for an event and we signed up to attend! It was LIFE CHANGING for us! We heard amazing insight from @daveramsey & @chrishogan360!
•
This event was something that I truly believed help to change our financial future. It motivated us to pick up the pace and get through our debt free journey TOGETHER! We got gazelle intense and were laser-focused on our goal!
•
It was 15 months after this event that we became DEBT FREE after working hard for 33 months & paying off $62,000. (Don’t get too excited, now we are back in baby step 2 buuuut should be debt free again in DECEMBER!)
•
I’m so thankful we had the opportunity to attend this event! I’m thankful for the way it has impacted my life.
•
We don’t exactly do everything 100% the “Dave Ramsey” way... but we respect him BIG time and he has been an integral part of our budgeting & getting out of debt. We are thankful for his influence in our lives.
•
If you’re someone who is just starting out on your debt free journey or maybe you’re staring at a huge mountain of debt in front of you and you don’t even know where to start - I definitely recommend reading his book, The Total Money Makeover! It’ll change your life. He has a baby step program that he maps out there and it’s a great place to begin!! There are a ton of FREE resources out there!!!! (That being said, utilize your local library & GOOGLE!)
•
At the end of the day - you have to figure out what works for YOU and your family and then KNOCK OUT YOUR DEBT. You don’t want to live this life always paying for your past financial choices. Get on a budget. Get out of debt. Get your finances together so you can LIVE & GIVE LIKE NO ONE ELSE. 🖤

  • Actually - I’m still unsure! We were aiming for $70 a week, or under $300 a month, but it was getting hard to stick to. Because I work our budget out for the financial year (in Aus that’s July-June), it meant we only had $850 left allocated for three months! .
.
I wasn’t sure if that was a realistic target, so I did a bit of number shuffling, reduced the amount we were putting to savings, and have temporarily increased it to $75 a week.
.
.
However, if you’ve seen my stories this week, you’ll know we are in “make do” mode. I’m shopping the pantry/fridge/freezer pretty hard, and getting creative about dinners and meals. We also have a few birthday events on in the next week. So the pressure is off, we have allocated more money and now have more wriggle room, but that doesn’t mean I need to spend that much! .
.
Do you guys find yourselves tweaking and altering your budget as you go?

    .

  • If you’re into architecture, history and medieval imperialism then Budapest is for you. I literally cannot wait to get to a museum tomorrow so I can learn more about the country’s history. The tidbits that I’ve learned so far are pretty fascinating. Can anyone out there recommend some museums? I have a few in mind like The House of Terror but I’m open to other options as well.

  • Today I bought myself flowers! 💐 Here’s why!
A. I think self care is super important and these just made my whole day!
B. They were in the budget
C. Costco has THE BEST flowers for a great price and they seem to always last forever!
D. It was my prize for hitting one of my goal weight milestones! I was 128 this morning officially losing 10 pounds on the Carb Nite solution... kinda like keto.🧀
.
I loooove doing these milestone prizes! I don’t really have any for our debt free milestones but maybe I should consider it. They keep me so motivated!! If you have debt milestones please share what you’ve done! 🌷

  • Don't forget to find joy in the small things every single day!⁣⠀⁣
⁣⠀⁣
I am in the midst of a very tough season in life right now where I find myself overwhelmed by the responsibilities of my job as a tax accountant, which seem to be at odds with the tug of my heart as a mom to be with my little babe. ⁣⠀⁣
⁣⠀⁣
I'm tired. My plate is completely full. I get depressed easily. After a long day at the office I come home with a short fuse.⁣⠀⁣
⁣⠀⁣
But you know what?⁣⠀⁣
⁣⠀⁣
Today I was able to take a break from the madness and enjoy two of my favorite things- humans who have a great sense of humor, and coffee. ⁣⠀⁣
⁣⠀⁣
It's the small things. ⁣⠀⁣
⁣⠀⁣
Maybe you're feeling the same way while paying off debt. ⁣⠀⁣
⁣⠀⁣
The mountain is too big. It's taking too long. You'll never reach your goals. Everyone else is taking exotic vacations while your busting your ass to pay off student loans/credit card debt, etc. and it's not fair. ⁣⠀⁣
⁣⠀⁣
Celebrate the small wins! ⁣⠀⁣
⁣⠀⁣
You paid off another credit card?Awesome! Take your spouse on an ice cream date.⁣⠀⁣ ⁣Paid off another student loan? Woohoo! Proudly display that "loan paid in full" notice on your fridge for all to see! We all have those days/seasons. Paying off debt is definitely a season of life that is tough. ⁣⠀⁣
⁣⠀⁣
Take time to be grateful for the small things.⁣⠀⁣
===================================== What is ONE thing you are grateful for?? Big or small???

  • I booked a flight for a trip this summer that I was reimbursed for. I was asked to book it first and then relay the cost of the ticket. Confession is, I had to use my credit card for the first time since paying off all of my credit card debt! I got so nervous about it that I checked my card balance every couple of hours for days until the charge showed up. I immediately paid off the balance!!! And now I can breath again.

  • I haven’t posted for a while...😱. Many things going on. Wanted to post about how to save money on clothes again. I turned this denim skirt into a new skirt by simply cutting! First, I purchased this skirt from Goodwill. I liked it at one time, but after trying it on today I hated it. I thought “oh well, I’ll just donate it.” “It wasn’t expensive!” Then I realized I could try to cut it and see what I got. What I got was a shorter skirt, which changed the shape, and a raw hem which is in style now. I tried it on and LOVE it!! Don’t be afraid to repurpose clothing!

  • “Years ago, a financial planner told clients to freeze their credit cards in blocks of ice. When they were tempted to spend, they would be forced to melt the ice, giving them time to rethink impulse purchases. An even better solution is to cut up your cards entirely so that you can’t charge anything else to them.

You might exclaim, “But I can’t pay my bills without a credit card! That means I don’t eat.” This may sound harsh, but the reality is, you’re not paying your bills. The credit card is merely allowing you to postpone your bill paying.” This has stuck with us because it reminds us that “cash is king”. 👑 If you want to make the most of your income to save and invest, clear that unneeded debt 🙅‍♂️🙅‍♀️

  • Stop letting people opinions crush your realness and orignality... No one is an expert on your life or the rules to help you be debt free... do what works for you ... guidance is okay when you are unfamiliar or want to learn and grow... if a person doesn't like the way you are conducting your business it is not your bag to carry! IJS 😉

  • So i got my start date, but this!! I don’t like their pay periods. I’m used to the twice a month, but I won’t have a paycheck for the entire month. And I’m having my wedding ceremony the weekend before I start my new job. We’re gonna have to mega stick to budget in April since i won’t get a paycheck the beginning of the month, and when I do it will be for 1 week only. 😩😩 #adulting #budgeting #budgetlife #newjobwhodis #debtfreejourney #debtfreecommunity #weddingparty

  • Last year my phone started switching itself off all the time, even with a full battery. Not wanting to be without a reliable phone my sweet husband bought me a new one (outright). Having just spent so much on the new phone I said I would come back the following week to pick up a case, before I got back though I dropped it and smashed the screen, it was one of those moments where it lands face down and you slowly turn it over hoping for the best. Anyway I continued to use it but in the last few weeks the screen has become near impossible to use. A friend let me know that you can get batteries for iPhones now so my husband and I went back to the apple store with my original phone so I could get a new battery and use it until we save to get my new phone repaired. When we arrived they did some diagnostic testing and found there wasn’t a problem with the battery at all but it was just desperate for a software update. Turns out all I needed to do was back up & restore it and it works perfectly again (turns out we really didn’t need to pay all that money for a new phone last year!), the only money I spent was $11 for a new sim tray. So my encouragement to you sweet friends is first, before assuming you need a new phone and spending a truck load of money, take advantage of their diagnostic testing and see if there’s an easy (& cheaper) way to fix your current phone, and second, always invest in a protective case!

It can be very difficult to resist hanging out with friends, grabbing drinks 🍸 , eating 🍽 out for dinner, going to the movies 🎥 , etc BUT when you know you have financial goals 🎯, this can be necessary. You can still have cheap fun at home... or use this time for self care or to reflect on your goals and find new ways to meet them. ⁣
