I would love to see my designs on a large scale someday. There are a number of companies that work with artists for removable wallpaper or wall decals, like @wallsneedlove or @rockymountaindecals. It’s such a cool concept and I really feel like black and white florals translate so well into wallpaper. So, now I need to learn how to do surface pattern design 😆

I feel like this is a never ending list. For now, though, my focus is on a website with new products including these temporary tattoos and hand-painted linen wall hangings. I’m excited, guys. I I’m finally feeling inspired again and have a vision for where I want to take things.

| workspace : tidy or messy? | {#marchmeetthemaker I’m still not caught up, Day 15 is in my stories!}
I don’t really have a designated workspace. I have a desk. But it’s in the basement and dark so I usually find myself either at the kitchen table or (quite literally) in bed drawing or editing. I keep my supplies organized and tuck them away as soon as I’m done with them because, toddler. I’ve also been striving to live a more purposeful and minimal life over the last few years so I keep only what I need and have donated all of my supplies that are old or no longer in use. So I guess in short. Tidy.

| mistake or lesson |
This whole year has been a learning process for me. I’m still in the early stages of sharing my work here, but something I’ve been surprised by is what a difference it can make to the look and feel of your feed if you plan ahead. I recently started to use an app called @preview.app. I can drag and drop my photos around and see what the grid will look like in advance. It helps me ensure I’m posting a variety of photos each week. I dare you to scroll back and guess where I started actually planning and putting thought into the aesthetic of my posts. I can pin point with certainty 😆🤦🏼‍♀️

  • Here is  the black and grey sunflower tattoo vs its color version. For the same tattoo, both have very different looks. We were taking pictures as we progressed from the completion of its outline and shading to the final look in color. Blackline and dotwork technique have helped to shape a multidimensional image while staying away from photographic realism.

While we like both versions and have trouble choosing one over another, which one would you have chosen? Let us know in the comments :)

  • • D A Y 2 0 • | design process |
Today’s prompt for @joannehawker’s #marchmeetthemaker challenge is design process.
Typically, I start with a very light sketch of my composition. This is always really rough. Maybe 60 seconds rough. I never add too many details in my pencil sketch for a few different reasons. First, I always change things a bit as I work through a piece, so it seems like a waste. Second, the pencil is erased after the ink is added and I don’t want there to be any lines left behind.
I use @sakuraofamerica pens to ink in my design. My favourite tips are .01, .02 and .005.
Once I’m done with the ink, I’ll erase any pencil lines with a kneadable eraser. I highly recommend trying one of these out if you’ve never used one. No mess at all and they last forever.
If I have plans to digitize my drawing to make prints/tattoos/etc I will either photograph or scan it. I prefer photographing black and white drawings. I find I get a bit more detail as sometimes the scanner light can make the drawings look a bit over exposed and can diminish some of the details. I use a Nikon D700 in natural sunlight.
For prints, I’ll make minor edits in photoshop, such as modify the levels to get rid of any background texture and clean up any mistakes. I also crop the drawings or resize according to the size of prints I’m making.
Once the drawings are digitized, I send them over to Ashleigh @dixon_ink who works her magic for me. We recently started using 100% cotton rag paper. It is matte and soft and beautiful and I can’t wait to release my prints on this paper.
It’s definitely been a learning process and I’m sure if asked again what my design process is in a few months it will be totally different.
