The Prime Minister of Finland, Juha Sipilä, announced on March 8th, 37 days before the general elections, that the coalition government would resign. Finland previously has had a very devoted health care system but "spending has declined over recent years" and future growth in spending was also seeked to be reduced (Reuters). Furthermore, this government was not able to pass thorough reforms in health and social care that it perceived as necessary. Other issues include other "budget cuts", workers having to do more work for lower income, the "penalizing" of "jobless people who fail to show they are actively seeking to improve their situation,” and allowing for more competitiveness between taxi companies (Bloomberg). Hence, 60% of Finish people, according to a poll by newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, is said to agree with the resignation of the government. The government will still perform its functions as a "caretaker" before the elections take place. (Sources: Reuters and Bloomberg)⁣

EU leaders have agreed on a plan to postpone Brexit beyond the 29 of March until 2 May if MPs approve the withdrawal deal negotiated with the EU next week. If the deal is not agreed upon, the EU will allow for a delay until 12 April to give the UK time to either get the deal through or to suggest a new plan for the future. Theresa May has stated that MPs now face a clear choice: either to support the withdrawal deal and allow Brexit to proceed in an ‘orderly manner’ or face the potential to partake in European elections. May further stated that she ‘will make every effort to make sure we can leave with a deal and move our country forward’. European Council President Donald Tusk has revealed that until 12 April, all options are viable to the UK government whether that be a deal, a no deal, a long extension or the revetment of Article 50, the article stating the procedure for member withdrawal from the EU. Following this date, if the UK has not decided whether to partake in European parliamentary election, the possibility of a further extension will become ‘impossible’.⁣

On March 20, 2019, a bus carrying 51 schoolchildren was hijacked by its driver and set alight on the outskirts of Milan, Italy. The bus driver Ousseynou Sy, a 47-year-old Italian citizen, was arrested shortly after the incident. Sy, armed with a cigarette lighter and two canisters filled with petrol, had tied the children up with electric cable. Local authorities reported that petrol had been spread around the bus in an attempt to set it ablaze with the children inside. Italian authorities were able to smash the rear windows and let the passengers off before the bus burst into flames. 12 students suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure. The suspect’s motive for the hijack is still unclear. Reports have suggested however that the bus driver was angry about Italy’s migrant policy. Police spokesman Marco Palmieri declared in a statement that the suspect had shouted "stop the deaths in the Mediterranean" during the incident that lasted over 40 minutes.⁣

The 2008 Financial crisis was the worst crisis since the 1930s Great Depression, and was followed by a slowdown nicknamed the Great Recession. Within two years, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, an index many consider to be a barometer for the economy, reached historically highest and lowest points. Prior to the crisis, the economy saw record levels of the issuance of loans, doubling the amount of debt within 7 years. A majority of these loans were used for speculation and purchasing real estate, 51% going to properties and 32% going back to the financial sector. As a result, home prices started soaring. However, the majority of loans issued had high risks of default, which are called subprime mortgages. At one point, oversaturation in the market led to the decline of home prices, causing many of these subprime mortgages to default. As mortgages defaulted around the world, banks started going bankrupt. After the crisis, banks lost confidence and limited lending, slowing down the economy. The failures led to a $700 billion bailout package by the fed, and saw a 31.8% decline in home prices along with a 9% unemployment rate.⁣

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) is the first global health treaty negotiated under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO). The FCTC is one of the most quickly ratified treaties in U.N. history and it aims to “protect present and future generations from the devastating health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke” by setting worldwide standards stating the dangers of tobacco and limiting its use. The WHO FCTC sets rules regarding the production, sale, distribution, advertisement, taxation and foreign investments of tobacco products. The treaty was adopted at the 56th World Health Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland on May 21, 2003, and became effective on February 27, 2005. It has been signed by 168 countries and is legally binding in 181 ratifying countries. There are currently 15 U.N. states that are non-parties to the treaty including Argentina, Switzerland, the United States, Indonesia, Monaco and more.⁣

Insulin is a natural hormone that controls a person’s blood sugar levels, and an irregularity in insulin levels could cause problems such as vision loss, organ failure and loss of consciousness. In 1923, insulin was sold at around $1, but a vial of insulin from the three major brands (Humalog, Apidra and Novolog) are now sold at retail prices around $300. Even accounting for inflation, that's a price increase of over 1,000%. In 2017, 26-year-old Alec Smith died after being unable to afford his insulin price of $1,000 nor could he afford a proper insurance plan. The average out of pocket monthly diabetic medicine cost for Americans is $360. Many diabetic patients are protesting against pharmaceutical companies and insurance providers for lower insulin costs. In addition, some Americans are even travelling to other places such as Canada and Tijuana, Mexico in order to purchase cheaper insulin. ⁣

Over the last few days, large groups of Palestinians have taken to the streets to demand an improvement in the economic situation and living conditions in the Gaza strip, criticising Hamas, the militant Islamist group ruling the strip. Protesters chanting ‘we want to live' have gathered around nine locations in Gaza’s city centre and in refugee camps, protesting specifically about the economic hardships caused by the blockade on movement of people and goods by Israel and Egypt and by the recent increase in taxes in Gaza. Protesters state their movement is ‘a peaceful, popular youth movement’, who ‘don’t want to change political systems’ and who simply want to ‘get [their] rights’. Amongst these rights are the right to jobs, equality and freedom, states one of the organisers Moumen al-Natour. These protests mark the biggest mass public opposition to Hamas since the group took control of Gaza in 2007 and the Hamas response has been harsh, with online videos showing security personnel hitting people and shooting in the air, with dozens of people having been arrested since. Hamas has blamed its political rival, Fatah, for stirring unrest to destabilise Gaza and undermine the Hamas' authority. These protests are amongst a few of recent signs showing the crackdown in command of Hamas, including the firing of two rockets on Thursday from Gaza to Tel Aviv for the first time since 2014.⁣

On 19 March, President Donald Trump hosted a meeting with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro with the Venezuelan crisis and trade at the top of the agenda. President Trump’s meeting with President Bolsonaro, who has been dubbed the “Trump of the Tropics”, was the first face-to-face meeting of the two. Both leaders declared Juan Guaido as the rightful president of Venezuela, and Brazil has allowed the U.S. to give humanitarian aid to Venezuela at Brazil’s northern border; however the meeting included discussion of further action with the possibility of Brazil using its relationship with the Venezuelan military to act as an intermediary in the crisis. The two also discussed the U.S. granting Brazil “major non-NATO ally” status and a site in Brazil for U.S. commercial space launches.⁣

After 30 years in power Kazakhstan's only president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, announced his resignation. Since the independence of Kazakhstan in 1991, Nazarbayev has ruled the oil-rich nation without any contention to his power. Although he has won a total of four elections from 1999 to 2015, his popularity seems to be declining. Following the recent economic crisis, between 2013 and 2017 which saw GDP Growth cut in half, there has been growing discontent against the long-reigning leader. The surprising announcement which occurred on the 19th of March does not mean that Nazarbayev will completely step down from the government. Nazarbayev will remain the head of the Security Council of Kazakhstan as well as the head of the ruling party, thereby holding the formal title "Leader of the Nation". The position of the president will move onto the speaker of the upper house of parliament, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev would take over as acting president for the remainder of his term which expires in March 2020.⁣

On March 13, 2019, several Afghans took to social media to voice their outrage and demand justice for the kidnapping and killing of a six-year-old girl in the country’s capital, Kabul. Local authorities later arrested two men and released a video clip showing the two suspects who had confessed to the crime. Afghanistan’s interior ministry reported that the girl, named Mahsa, was kidnapped on March 10 and her captors demanded a ransom of $300,000. The two men said that they had picked up the child on a motorcycle, took her to a rented room and when the ransom failed to arrive, killed her.⁣

In 1975, following the Cambodian Civil War, the Khmer Rouge, or Red Cambodians, seized power of the country. The communist group had been built up in the Cambodian jungle during the later years of the Vietnam War. Their leader, Pol Pot, presided over a highly repressive and autocratic period. During his regime, the Khmer Rouge targeted any perceived opposition to the state, including professionals, intellectuals and ethnic minorities, as well as many other sectors of society. In just four years, Pol Pot’s regime killed between 1.5 and 3 million Cambodians, roughly a quarter of the entire population in 1975. This genocide was committed largely in what are called ‘killing fields’, where mass groups of people were sent to be killed and buried in mass graves. The Khmer Rouge were driven out of their power bases by invading Vietnamese forces in 1979. It was not until 1997 that Pol Pot was denounced by his former colleagues in a show trial which led to his house arrest. He died in 1998 before he could be tried for crimes against humanity. Pot’s official cause of death was heart failure, but the lack of an autopsy has raised suspicions that he committed suicide.⁣

On March 13, 2019, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a moratorium on the death penalty in California, granting reprieve to 737 condemned inmates – the largest death row population in the United States. During a news conference he declared that "the death penalty has been an abject failure. It discriminates based on the color of your skin or how much money you make." Newsom further added that"it's ineffective, irreversible, and immoral. It goes against the very values that we stand for, which is why California is putting a stop to this failed system." The order also withdraws the state’s lethal injection protocol as well as the closure of a new execution chamber at San Quentin State Prison. U.S. President Donald Trump denounced the decision in a tweet the same day, saying “defying voters, the Governor of California will halt all death penalty executions of 737 stone cold killers. Friends and families of the always forgotten VICTIMS are not thrilled, and neither am I!” The state of California has not held an execution since January 2006.⁣

Newsom further added that"it's ineffective, irreversible, and immoral.

Flash floods in Indonesia’s province of Papua on the 17th of March have killed at least 73 and left more than 60 injured. Roads have been blocked by landslides and fallen trees with floodwaters have damaged two bridges and more than a hundred houses, making it difficult for rescue workers to reach more remote regions of the province. More than 4000 people have since been forced from their homes and many are now sheltering in government offices. On the 17th of March, Lombok additionally suffered from a 5.4 magnitude earthquake triggering a landslide. At least two people have been reported dead by authorities and at least 30 are injured. Multiple houses have further been destroyed. ⁣

In 2014, the Kenyan government said it would build a 708km (435 miles) wall made up of concrete barriers, fences, ditches, and observation posts overlooked by CCTV stations along its border with Somalia in order to stop al-Shabab militants from crossing into Kenya but the “wall” has become a 10km long wire fence. The 10km fence has cost 3.4 billion Kenyan shillings ($35 million) which is more than double the amount of money the Kenyan government has set aside for its strategic 2019 food reserves. Kenyan MPs are extremely dissatisfied with the cost of the wall and some are questioning the effectiveness of a wire fence in keeping out terrorists. John Mbadi, Minority Leader in Kenya's National Assembly, called the wall “a waste” and that Kenya should invest in “intelligence-gathering technology to limit attacks caused by al-Shabab." The Parliament has stopped the wall’s construction and has demanded an explanation from the state regarding the usage of the wall’s funds.⁣

Following the second rejection of Theresa May’s withdrawal deal, the UK government has been planning a third attempt to pass it through parliament. However, speaker John Bercow, the highest authority of the House of Commons responsibly for controlling debates, calling MPs to speak and choosing which amendments can be debated, has stated that he will not allow a third ‘meaningful vote’ in the next few days on virtually the same motion rejected by MPs last week and that any further votes must pass the ’test’ he has set out. Mr Bercow’s statement will not stop Brexit from happening, which is scheduled for the 29th of March, but makes it unlikely that the government will put another vote on the deal to Parliament this week. It will also be less likely for May to ask the EU leaders at a summit this week for an extension, as Ms May had previously claimed she would do if her deal succeeded in Parliament. The ultimate result is most likely to be a longer delay on Brexit with an eventual softer Brexit than planned and a closer relationship with the EU. While MPs were surprised by the statement, the government maintains that there ‘is a way round this complication’ though it has ‘made things significantly more complicated’.⁣

Jordan is a densely populated country with over 10 million residents in an area of 34,495 square miles. The country has provided refuge for Palestinian, Syrian, Iraqi, and Yemeni refugees in the midst of wars; it is one of the Arab countries that has been left intact in the violence resulting from the Arab Spring. The dominant religions in the kingdom are Islam and Christianity, provided that there is a large population for both religions; the official language of the kingdom is Arabic. Jordan is commonly known for its geography that contains a variety of historical, archaeological, and religious sites such as Al Khazneh in Petra and The Karak Castle. France has decided to repatriate five young children of jihadist fighters from northern Syria based on their view that they are vulnerable orphans. They have been taken from refugee camps in Syria housing women and children who have fled the Islamic State group’s last bastion. The French Foreign Ministry, however, maintains that 'adult French nationals - jihadist fighters with Daesh [IS] - France’s position remains unchanged: they must be tried on the territory where they committed their crimes’. Relative’s of French IS jihadists have urged the government to repatriate such children arguing that they are not responsible for their position in war-torn Syria and that it is a humanitarian necessity. The repatriation comes amidst the UK’s decision to refuse to let Shamima Begum, who joined IS in Syria when she was 15, return with her new born son. The UK government has since removed her citizenship and her baby died earlier this month.⁣

On March 15, 2019, U.S. President Donald Trump signed the first veto of his presidency to protect his national emergency declaration for border wall funding. This decision comes following his March 14 defeat when senators voted to terminate his declaration of an emergency on the Mexican border. Speaking from the oval office, Trump declared that "Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it." He added that the resolution, which would have reversed the national emergency "put countless Americans in danger." Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives, declared that Trump has “chosen to continue to defy the Constitution, the Congress and the will of the American people." Trump's emergency declaration allows him to secure funding for the construction of border walls.⁣

NASA is once again preparing for human missions to the Moon. Growing scientific knowledge of The Solar System has led the agency to undertake the project of developing the most advanced spacecraft and rocket in the history of space travel in order to lead the next steps of human exploration deeper into space. NASA’s powerful new Space Launch will carry astronauts aboard the American-European interplanetary spacecraft Orion to the Moon from NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida. There, astronauts will build and test the systems needed for challenging missions to other destinations deeper into space, including Mars. A crewless flight of the Orion capsule around the moon, known as Exploration Mission-1, is scheduled for June of 2020 in order to test its new deep space exploration system. During the second flight scheduled for June 2022 and with a crew of 4 astronauts, and the subsequent flights, NASA intends to invest in the development of new technologies and innovative approaches to solving problems in preparation for longer-duration missions farther from Earth. The agency’s goal is to broaden its deep space capabilities before ultimately sending humans to Mars.⁣

Andrew Yang is a 2020 U.S. Democratic presidential candidate, running with the slogan “Humanity First”. Born in New York on January 13, 1975, Yang went on to study in Brown University for a B.A. in Economics and Columbia for a JD (Juris Doctor). Yang campaigns three main principles/policies; the Freedom Dividend, Medicare-for-all, and Human capitalism, with a general concern over the disruptive economic effects of automation. The Freedom Dividend is a monthly $1000 Universal Basic Income given to all U.S. citizens over the age of 18, a policy that Yang believes will “end poverty in the most direct manner possible”. Yang also wishes to implement a single-payer healthcare system, changing the doctor payment method to a flat salary instead of the current price-for-service method. Furthermore, Yang also proposes a Digital Social Credit system, allowing individuals who “drives significant social value” to exchange social credits with U.S. dollars. Recently, Yang have gained traction in social media, especially among the youth. After receiving donations from 65,000 individuals, Yang managed to secure a position in the Democratic primary debates.⁣

Presently, U.S. citizens are able to travel to Europe for 90 days without any sort of travel authorization. According to a report by CNN, ETIAS will change that as U.S. citizens visiting parts of Europe will need authorization from the EU in 2021. The U.S. will not be the only country affected by the changes. From 2021 onwards, citizens and visa-free travellers from 60 countries will need to request ETIAS authorization before visiting the Schengen Area. The rapidly growing scandal has begun threatening the entire entertainment industry of South Korea. After being detained, Seungri offered to reporters: "I lower my head and offer my apology to the people and people nearby who were hurt and have suffered." The singer has not officially commented on the allegations but has terminated his contract with his record company YG Entertainment. Western Sahara is a disputed territory in the south of Morocco and west of Mauritania. The region was under Spanish control and was later controlled by Morocco and Mauritania after Spain relinquished control after a decolonization notice by the UN-SC. After a conflict between the two countries, a Sharawi nationalist movement, the Polisario Front, proclaimed the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in Western Sahara. The United Nations considers the Polisario Front to be the legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people and maintains that the Sahrawis have a right to self-determination. Since a United Nations-sponsored ceasefire agreement in 1991, two-thirds of the territory has been administered by the Moroccan government, with tacit support from France and the United States, and the remainder by the SADR, backed by Algeria. As of 2017, no other member state of the United Nations has ever officially recognized Moroccan sovereignty over parts of Western Sahara. However, a number of countries have expressed their support for future recognition of the Moroccan annexation of the territory as an autonomous part of the Kingdom. ⁣

According to the United Nations, 2018 was recorded as the deadliest year for children casualties in the Syrian Civil War. The UN reported that of the deaths officials could verify, 1,106 children were killed. Within the nine ongoing years of the war, thousands of Syrians have been killed and misplaced. With over 2.6 million Syrian refugees across the world, many Syrians still remain in camps within the the country. Inside overcrowded camps, safety and access to safe water, food, shelter, education and healthcare still remain scarce. In the Al Hol camp, located in Northeastern Syria, reports of around 240 children arrived separated from their families. In addition unexploded ordnances, the remains of explosive weapons, have killed and injured 434 children in 2018 alone. Unexploded ordnances, common across the country, have resulted in thousands of civilian casualties, specifically Syrians in trek to camps for safety. In the midst of ongoing and intensifying fighting, UNICEF is urging all parties of the war to work towards fulfilling safety and vital needs of the children caught between the conflict.

In an interview with a New York TV station, News12, Hillary Clinton announced that she will not be joining the ever growing pool of candidates running to be the Democratic nominee for the 2020 presidential election. The former senator, former Secretary of State, and 2016 Democratic nominee for president said that although she will not be running, she is “going to keep working on and speaking and standing for what [she believes].” Clinton has met with many of the 2020 Democratic primary candidates including Senators Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, and Elizabeth Warren, and warned them not to “take anything for granted, even though [the U.S.] has a list of real problems and broken promises.”⁣
