  • Hallo ihr Lieben!
Wie versprochen kommt nun meine Meinung zu „On The Come Up“!😊 Angie Thomas konnte mich mit ihrem neusten Werk, ähnlich wie mit „The Hate U Give“, wieder einmal überzeugen!

  • On the Come Up by Angie Thomas has to be one of the most hyped novels of the year. Thomas' debut novel The Hate U Give was a total sensation so everyone has been waiting for her next book. •

It's difficult to over state how much I loved The Hate U Give. It's hands down one of the best books I've ever read. I enjoyed this book, but it didn't live up to The Hate U Give. It's the story of Bri, a teenager who is trying to make it as a rapper. Her dream is to lift her family out of poverty. •

I hope it gets made it into a movie because music plays such an important part of the story. It would be great to hear Bri perform her music. •

  • The Hate You Give
by Angie Thomas 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Starr lives in the ghetto but goes to school in the suburbs. However, she doesn't really bring the Starr from the hood to her predominantly white school. She lives in two very different worlds and she likes to keep them separate as much as possible. That's how it was until the tragic death of her best friend. Shot by a police officer while he was unarmed and harmless, Khalil is labelled all over the media as a drug-dealer and a gang-banger. So he probably deserved it, right? Anger is devouring Starr as well as grief. Where is the justice?
Through the story of Starr, Angie Thomas tackles major issues such as discrimination, racism and police brutality. She creates actually convincing and credible characters and relationships. And her storytelling talent made The Hate You Give a powerful contribution to the movement #BlackLivesMatter. It's YA at it's best. It's a perfect and essential book.

Read it for its:
😢 Beautiful characters that will melt your heart,
😲 Absolutely realistic and gripping plot,
💪 Empowering StandUp-SpeakUp vibes!

Read it because Black Lives Matter.

  • Hello friends! It’s the start of another week and time for a reading update 🙂 Last week I finished On The Come Up and I loved it! I’m looking forward to discussing it as part of #julietslibrarybookclub this month. I’m also going to be adding questions throughout the month to the Goodreads group (but no spoilers, don’t worry!) rather than just at the end of the month. I’ve already started the conversation over there so head on over if you’ve been reading along with me ☺️ (link in bio)

  • This is the highly anticipated second novel by Angie Thomas, the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling, award-winning The Hate U Give.
.
.

Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least win her first battle. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill.
But it’s hard to get your come up when you’re labeled a hoodlum at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job. So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral…for all the wrong reasons.
Bri soon finds herself at the center of a controversy, portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. But with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri doesn’t just want to make it—she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.
Insightful, unflinching, and full of heart, On the Come Up is an ode to hip hop from one of the most influential literary voices of a generation. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; and about how, especially for young black people, freedom of speech isn’t always free.

  • Book Club is this Sunday, so I better get a move along on our March pick! So far, I’m getting major 8 Mile vibes from On The Come Up. I love Angie Thomas’ narrative voice; I’m 10 pages in and I’m already rooting for Bri. Have you read this one?

Sometimes you can do everything right, and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right
.
The Hate you Give by @angiethomas was on my TBR since long, and finally when I've read it, I can't stop talking about it
.
This novel pictures the problem of racism spread in an extraordinary manner
.
This book talks about a black girl "Starr", who lives in a poor neighborhood called Garden High, but goes to High School in the suburbs
.
Things take a drastic turn when Starr is the only witness of her best friend Khalil's murder .
Khalil was murdered by a cop, who was white and being the only witness of the awful murder, Starr had to face some terrible difficulties
.
The novel maintains a special connect with the reader with each and every aspect mentioned
.
There were times when people defended the cop stating Khalil was a drug dealer, and was going to die anyway. That part made me teary eyed. The author has made a beautiful connect with the protagonist Starr
.
Also, the bonding between Uncle Carlos and Starr is phlegmatic, and how Starr's dad gets envious with that brings smile. .

  • Today, I am featuring the @nowinbooks read #OnTheComeUp by @angiethomas. I am also so excited that the #nowinbooks copy this month is signed. The NIB subscription also comes with a curated playlist that you can listen to as you read. This month's list is full of great music that goes with the book nicely.

Note that I received this book/set as a #nowinbooksbox rep! This means I also have the rep code 19REPOM (OM is for onemused, so that's an 'O') which you can use on the site to get 10% off subscriptions. Link is in my bio.

Description: Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least make it out of her neighborhood one day. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died before he hit big, Bri’s got big shoes to fill. But now that her mom has unexpectedly lost her job, food banks and shutoff notices are as much a part of Bri’s life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it—she has to make it.

On the Come Up is Angie Thomas’s homage to hip-hop, the art that sparked her passion for storytelling and continues to inspire her to this day. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; of the struggle to become who you are and not who everyone expects you to be; and of the desperate realities of poor and working-class black families.

  • New week, new mood ✨
Two books I have become obsessed with over the past year are The Hate U Give and On the Come Up by @angiethomas. Now let me tell you, these books touched my soul like no other, they make me so happy to be a part of the black community and have the most inspiring messages and characters. They both have stories that were moving but entertaining and I think Angie is officially one of those authors I’ll continue to follow - I’ll probably buy everything she releases from now on 👏🏾

  • The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
.
.
.
This book, recently made into a major movie, is an elegant examination of police brutality and racism in the US. I found it incredible and impossible to put down. I loved this book, and I would encourage everyone in my life to read or listen to it, particularly other white people. It’s our responsibility to educate ourselves, and books like this are a good way to start.

  • Can’t say I had a very exciting St. Patrick’s Day weekend, but I did receive many an entertaining text lmao that said, I took a break from my workload that is currently crushing me and wrote a little post about the haul I got when I was in NYC finally! Nothing too special, but something for me to look back on once I’ve finished them all. (P.S: the Woolf one is my fave but don’t tell the others). Y’all know where the link is ❤️📚✨

Nothing too special, but something for me to look back on once I’ve finished them all. (P.S: the Woolf one is my fave but don’t tell the others). Y’all know where the link is ❤️📚✨

@angiethomas

#bookreview Read this because the story of Bri, a black teenager who is a talented rapper, is told in a way that is not always sad, not always violent, and not always about pure luck. Although there are times when each of those things are present and push the story forward - they are done in a way that is new and newly urgent. It doesn’t simplify the ways that racism and police violence are present in poor black communities because Bri is not a simple character, her family is not a typical family, and the neighborhood she is from is not just part of another failing inner city. But the thing that makes readers connect to it is because we all know a Bri, a family like hers, and a city in this country - just like the one she’s trying to survive. ⁣

  • O ÓDIO QUE VOCÊ PASSA PARA AS CRIANCINHAS F*DE COM TODO MUNDO
___
