STACKED / BLEND

Helmcken Falls plunging into a massive snow cone during a night of stargazing in early March.

After a five hour drive I arrived at the end of the plowed road shortly after 2am, and boy it sure was dark under these Bortle Class 1 skies! Right away I noticed what appeared to be clouds in the sky directly above the waterfall, but after shooting a test photo I realized it was actually a mist plume rising up hundreds of feet into the air from the falls. The waterfall doesn't look all that big in this image under the Galactic Core, but it's over twice the height of Niagara Falls! The snow cone at the bottom is formed each winter by freezing mist. I left the camera sitting on the tripod for a couple hours while I waited for the Milky Way to move into position... that turned out to be a bad idea as the temperature dropped to -23°C that night. That was cold enough to cause the camera to malfunction, and the dreaded "Camera Error" message popped up on the LCD screen just as I began shooting the Milky Way. I ran back to the car with the camera, and after letting it warm up a bit it eventually started working again. That wasted a good 15-20 minutes though, and by then it was just minutes before Astronomical Dawn so I really had hurry in order to get some exposures for stacking before the sky began to brighten!

My first Milky Way photo of the season! This is been a long time coming. I've always wanted to photograph this location, but never quite had the chance before. But, over the weekend I really didn't have a choice but to travel outside of the Tucson area last weekend due to weather. After searching Facebook and Instagram I found out people were heading up to the Phoenix area. I checked the weather and everything pointed to clear skies overnight. —-
So, I charged my batteries, loaded up all of my gear, took a nap, and watched some TV until it was time to get on the road. At about midnight I headed up towards Phoenix, getting to a parking spot with plenty of time to hike out to this spot and setup. Due to the time of year I didn't have time to do anything other then capture as many images I can with the hopes of stacking them to create what you see here before the sun came up. This is #1 of 3 captured over the 3 hours I had to image.
—-
I would have had this up earlier, but Photoshop kept crashing and I had to re-edit this image 5 times.. So, I hope you enjoy!

  • Your home for two months at 5,350m above sea level. Panorama shot 3 of 3 from Mt. Everest basecamp.
.
It rumbles, cracks, shifts and reshapes itself while you sleep. The flowing river of frozen ice known as the Khumbu Icefall is in constant motion and impacts the glacier beneath climbers at Mt. Everest basecamp. Seracs dislodge then collapse up high and crevasses are formed or swallowed up. Mother Earth’s voice is the soundtrack you try to ignore that accompanies your dreams as you attempt to get some shuteye at the base of the roof of the world.
.
It can be unnerving if you overthink it. The sounds of the glacier crunching beneath you as you lay awake in your tent watching climbers enter the Icefall, anticipating your rotation, telling yourself the story that all will be just fine.
.
Your home away from home is one of the most spectacular camp sites on Earth. 360 degrees of mountain views all around you. The darkest of skies, often crystal clear on the edge of Nepal’s border, an incredibly remote ‘safe zone’ where humans are transient and Everest resides. It’s a journey of a lifetime and a dream that many are about to live this coming season.
.
Wishing the best to those that are gearing up for their two month adventure to the top of the world. May the journey be a safe one, one that is lived for day to day ever-presence with the hope for the prize of the very highest point.
.
Ad Astra fellow adventurers. Wishing you the safest climb and journey home.

First Milky Way of the season, with Venus and Jupiter making an appearance. Technically you can always shoot the Milky Way, but it’s juicy core isn’t visible from the mid fall to mid winter. This was taken near Crowley Lake, with the town of Crowley glowing in the foreground. It was -9F out and all my camera gear, me and my dog froze...temporally.

Location: Pemaquid, Maine⠀
Title: The afterglow⠀
⠀
For those who are fans of seascape and panoramic view of the ocean, Maine can be one of the best choices. This photo was taken during a scouting of an area near the infamous Pemaquid Point Light. This image is really creative as it has been captured with an illusion of depth. The placement of compositional elements such as the rock formation on the foreground and the azure skyline on the background emphasized the third dimensional feel of this photo.⠀
⠀
The subdued and dark colors in this picture created a sense of depth as well. The use of the magenta sky at the back part of the picture allows the eyes of the viewers to work they way into exploring the photograph. This creates a 3-dimensional charm. The visual lines created by the rock formation lead the viewers deeper into the beautiful sunset scene and interesting fading skyline.⠀
