in 1994 the new york house dj todd terry took a song by indie band - everything but the girl - and turned it into an international club hit. “missing” is a cassette i will never dispose of. even though the duo were very much in the alternative world they wrote this song with dance audiences in mind. i would go as far as to say that the aesthetic of this record informed robyn’s “dancing on my own”, perhaps the most choking song about absent-heartedness among a sea of bodies. when i was a kid, people i loved came and went and this song was odd comfort on my tape deck. i have found myself in a permanent state of longing for most of my years. “and i miss you like the deserts miss the rain.” 🐫

in today’s @latimes and online: my profile of TAMARYN, one of *the* most slept-on, influential and uncompromising underground synthpop acts of the past decade. her new album “dreaming the dark” is out tomorrow and i think it’s her best work yet. (sidenote: i cropped the headline out of this because the times always put the most diabolical heads on my stories, so bad they ruin the whole tone of the piece and it’s my head on the plate, and so every publication date begins with a fight... i vote for writers being able to write their own headline. is there a trade union in which we can make that law so we can control this bullshit?) link in b.

“it appears that countless women born between the years of 1965 and 1978 are in love with john cusack. i cannot fathom how he isn’t the number-one-box-office-star in america, because every straight girl i know would sell her soul to share a milkshake with that motherfucker. for upwardly mobile women in their twenties and thirties, john cusack is the neo-elvis. but here’s what none of these upwardly mobile women seem to realize: they don’t love john cusack. they love lloyd dobler. when they see mr cusack, they are still seeing the optimistic, charmingly loquacious teenager he played in ‘say anything’, a movie that came out more than a decade ago. this is why the kind of women i tend to find attractive will never be satisfied by me. we will both measure our relationship against the prospect of fake love.” - chuck klosterman, ‘sex, drugs and cocoa puffs’

this band came over yesterday for a chat and brought a quiet confidence with them. they played their first LA show last night. this song is called “the others” and it’s about watching grenfell fall. their name is @whenyoungband, they’re from limerick, ireland. their debut album is coming soon and it’s a smasher. i’d recommend you see them at the moroccan lounge on wednesday.

in magazines and online today: i profile the delight that is lizzo for playboy. read it, buy it, pin it on your wall. let’s shake this shit up.🐰”the way we talk about gender has to change... gender doesn’t really exist. we created social gender, so we gotta destigmatize it, take the importance off of skirt versus pants. that’s not even real, dog. what are you fucking talking about? ‘this is a boys’ club.’ get your dumb ass outta here. this is a girls’ club, ho. shut up.” link in b.

from 2005-2007 i heard new order’s “blue monday” every tuesday night at a club we congregated at in manchester and i remember it because there was one night when i just threw my hands up and said to my friend sophie: “i will NEVER find a greater record than this!” and she just laughed at my enthusiasm. the kick at the beginning - artists work for a lifetime to find a sound *that* recognisable. moodymann dropped this last night at a dtla rave. in many ways i am still happiest in a dance pit, but it’s a little melancholy too. the more you dance the more nights you leave behind you. “blue monday” might still be the greatest record i have ever heard but i want to hear one that’s even better and i believe in the possibility. it makes sense that joy division morphed into a band who turned dance floors into a space for existential crisis. music man, i almost cried about it this morning. it’s taken me on the thrillest ride. love your life.
